Our favorite campground in Big Bend, considering the elevation

Great spot with fantastic views. Highly recommend bringing a mallet to help get your tent stakes in. We had some rain and cold weather when we went in early April, but I imagine most of the time it's hard to drive a stake in. The bathrooms are not too far of a walk and were clean. The visitor center and store were a short drive away as well.

I have stayed in Chisos many times thru the past 35 years.Never get tired of the great scenery and great camp host.

Great location but the site is not level and has no shade from the sun.

Loved our stay at Chisos Basin campground. Only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is the bathroom is in need of some repairs (one sink wasnt working) but since they close for 2 years in one month, seems like they are letting things pass. We stayed in site 41 in my 19 ft campervan. We fit but I wouldnt want any longer of a vehicle. View is amazing and the camp host is awesome. Be sure to do the window trail and lost mine trail since both are nearby. Cant wait to go back in 2 years and see the improvements.

The campsites are very small and right on top of each other. They are also not level at all. The campground is best for tent camping IMO and maybe that's already known. With that said, it's set in a beautiful setting.

Great campground, awesome baleful and friendly camp host; appreciated the nearby camp store for ice!

The campsite was tight but the outstanding views far out weighed the small sites. Unfortunately, the rest rooms were not functioning due to drought conditions. We were camping in late March and experienced strong nightly storms and high winds. The hiking trails around the campground were excellent. We drove the Maxwell Ross Scenic Drive on a rainy day and it was a perfect, scenic drive to the Rio Grande.

This campground is absolutely beautiful. Chisos Basin is special! Site #26 has great shade all day which was awesome. However, it is really tiny and its difficult to find space to pitch a tent. There is no level ground at this site. We made it work, but want to warn folks especially if theyre trying to stay here with a couple tents!

This campsite is in such a gorgeous location. Absolutely stunning. You will be pretty close to other campers, but everyone was very polite and it was worth it for the location

We love camping in our National Parks and enjoyed our stay at Chisos Basin in Big Bend, with a couple of caveats. Because of the water shortage, there were no toilets or sinks (other than a utility). The port-a-potties filled up very quickly and were often out of toilet paper and fairly messy. The lack of any sink for washing faces, etc. was difficult in such a dry, dusty climate. And the camp store was more limited than other other NP experiences. They are about to begin a big remodel of the area, which I believe will address many of these challenges (including better water capture to respond to the drought), and I'm excited to see what Chisos Basin will look like on the other side of some of those repairs/renovations. The bear boxes at these camp sites are fantastic, and made it very easy to clean up the campsite and protect any food. Most of the sites are quite small and very close together; there's not much privacy at this campground. Our site (29, loop 2) had a good layout and a little more privacy than most. Some sites have ABSOLUTELY NO shade, which I imagine would be quite difficult in the summer months! The ones that do have shade structures (such as ours) are well suited to bringing a hammock-- I wish we had brought ours. This campsite can't be beat for convenience to the best hikes: Lost Mine, Windows, and Emory Peak were all fantastic and easily accessed. We did find that recent funding cuts meant we saw far fewer park rangers than we typically do on NP visits, and the visitor center hours were very limited :-( A sad state of affairs. But the ones that we did encounter were fantastic, as always. Rangers are what make America's Best Idea even better!

Site #43 was perfectly located with an amazing view. We repositioned the metal table to allow us to stake our tent in the center of the site facing the mountain range. We had a good size Kelty Discovery Basecamp 4p tent and had plenty of space remaining for our chairs without feeling cramped. There's a very large bolder that my daughter really enjoyed climbing on -- it made for a great spot to view the stars. The site is close enough to the bathroom but far enough to not feel/hear the noise from bathroom traffic. The bear box was super spacious. We had no issues during our two night stay. The camp host was super friendly and helpful. She drove by and introduced herself and gave information about the area. I would absolutely stay at this site again.

Our campsite offered spectacular views of Casa Grande, and the proximity to the Window and Lost Mine Trail was excellent. The park felt less busy than on Spring Break in years past, so that was a bonus. All park rangers, staff, and volunteers were friendly and kind. We love Big Bend!

Great location and campground. Right next to the Window Trail trailhead, beautiful scenery, easy to park and navigate. Note, the restrooms are currently not available for use.

Campsites are flat and accessible. No flush toilets available due to drought which is something to be aware of

It was the most beautiful campground we've ever stayed in!
@JenniferM11870 · Camped on Mar 10, 2025 at Campsite #35
Nice campsite, directly across from the bathrooms. No neighbors directly behind and close to the Window Trail which is nice. The ground is hard and rocky so you definitely need heavy duty tent stakes made for rocky ground. And you need a real hammer for those stakes, not a rubber mallet (ours broke). Also, it is very windy here so be prepared for that. Lots of broken tents and canopies during our stay. There is no shade at this site. Our 6 person tent fit just fine with room for a smaller tent. Can move the picnic table to make room. Neighbors are very close and noise carries very well here so youll hear that guy snoring across the way.

Very good night sky view! Just a bit windy some nights
@WilliamH158481 · Camped on Mar 7, 2025 at Campsite #5
Good camping experience. A few things to know beforehand, the campsites are pretty close to each other and the tent pad is about 75% gravel so heavy duty tent stakes are necessary

Best place to camp in big bend!
@EmilyK1749999 · Camped on Mar 6, 2025 at Campsite #56
First of all, I want to thank all the staff at the Chisos campground who were all clearly doing their best under difficult circumstances with senseless budget cuts. Every staff person I talked to was friendly and helpful, but there was no excuse for the unsanitary conditions with the porta potties. I get having to ration water given drought conditions, but not having any toilet paper, hand sanitizer, or water in the pump handwash stations was gross. The porta potties were not emptied often enough for the number of people and I had GI distress the day I left the campground even though I did my best to wash hands at my campsite with my drinking water stash. I don't think we want to honor the history of Big Bend by bringing back dysentery so I hope the sanitary conditions get improved, and I will write my senators and shame them for the budget cuts that brought on all this in the first place. If you are reading this as a prospective peak season visitor, bring your own toilet paper and have hand sanitizer on a keychain with you at all times.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
