The campsite was tight but the outstanding views far out weighed the small sites. Unfortunately, the rest rooms were not functioning due to drought conditions. We were camping in late March and experienced strong nightly storms and high winds. The hiking trails around the campground were excellent. We drove the Maxwell Ross Scenic Drive on a rainy day and it was a perfect, scenic drive to the Rio Grande.

Camp sites are very close together. Nevertheless, the campground was quiet at night.

Beautiful mountain surroundings! Friendly, helpful hosts! Fresh water faucet in close proximity. The sites are very close to each other. Noisy neighbors with bright lights were a negative. But overall, we greatly enjoyed our visit!

Gorgeous location. Site was perfect for us. We had a fox come by in the evening and we could hear javalinas at night outside our tent. The night sky is unbelievable

Incredible beauty all around. It was nice to have a place to wash dishes but without hot water it was tough

The Chisos Mountain Basic is an amazing location my absolute favorite area in the Big Bend Country. It has it all; temperate climate, views, stunning hikes for all levels. The campground is great, it has a lodge with cabins and restaurant, a visitor center AND grocery store. Theres fresh water and very nice restrooms in the campground. They even have bears in the Chisos! The ONLY thing missing is .. SHOWERS! The ONLY showers available in the entire park are at Rio Grande Village WHICH is on the desert floor where summer temperatures go reach 110. Meanwhile it may be 85 in the Basin, but hiking does work up a lather, and its a 60 mile round trip just to take a shower. So PLEASE: maybe pencil in some showers during your next budget cycle? Otherwise the Basin is amazing, and we love it love it love it!

The campground is wonderful, the bathrooms are clean and there is lots of space at each site!

Loved it! Well kept campground. Tent space was limited but plenty for our two backpacking size tents (note: stakes were a little tough to get in as the soil was compacted; well bring a mallet next time). Would recommend :)

Loved it at Big Bend National Park. It is definitely worth a long stay. We were there for 1 week with an infant and we were able to enjoy the park but, we were not able to do all the hikes we had wanted. We checked out the different camp grounds and chisos basin is my favorite

We loved our stay in Big Bend and would come again better yesterday than tomorrow

The park itself is worth the drive. The campground is not. The scenic drive and the trail up Santa Elena canyon was worth the drive. The trail to the Mules Ears Spring was not. The spring, if you can find it is just a puddle under some weeds. The hike out was interesting but it was really hot. The whole mountain region is fascinating given the surrounding terrain. If I ever go back to Big Bend I would not stay in the Chios campground. The sites are stacked one on top of the other and the bathroom was a joke. No lighting for the restrooms or the dish washing station. A simple battery operated motion detector light would have made all the difference. And it hadn't been cleaned in the time I was there, 3 days. I'd stay at one of the backcountry sites or the lodge. The parking lot at the Lost Mine trail was always full so I never got to see it.On the east side the Dugout Wells nature trail was worth the stop. The Rio Grande campground was more spread out. The host, Todd was very helpful. The showers were coin operated. I had not seen that in many years, but they worked just fine. The Boquillas Canyon Trail was worth the hike. Do it early before it gets hot. A lot of biting bugs and gnats at the campground, early October. Check out all the information exhibits.

Chisos is quite the oasis in the desert. Restrooms were okay, but not cleaned regularly. Some minor maintenance required. Campsite #39 is small and not flat, but we were camping in a Class B RV and the parking spot was level. This worked well for us. The site is also close to the restroom and the Windows trail. Restaurant at the lodge is typical and average; nothing special. I understand the entire park is due for some significant infrastructure upgrades that sounded positive.

The camp hosts were helpful and cared about all the campers. They checked in with us daily. I wish all the campsites had a cement pad with a covering. only about half did.

Wonderful campground! I simply want to thank and praise volunteer Kim Reilly. When I made online reservations some time ago, I was able to only get one night at Chisos Basin (campsite 33), which "forced" me to get 4 nights at the Rio Grande campground. When I got to Chisos and met Kim, she commented on my short stay and I told her my story. She immediately said they had some cancellations and proceeded to set me up for two nights at #47 and then 2 nights at #52. So, she set me up for those, cancelled my Rio Grande reservations, and was just wonderful...all the while saving me some money. One day I did go south and visited the Rio Grande campground; while certainly nice (grassy!), my experience of Big Bend would have been totally different from the great time I had staying at Chisos. Thank you, Kim! A wonderful volunteer!

Great place to stay while visiting Big Bend NP. Several of the best trails are close to the campground. Don’t forget to check out the restaurant at the lodge as they have great food.

We spent 3 nights there in the basin, where we hiked several trails and also spent some time in the visitor center. In all we spent a week in the park and enjoyed all of it...

Had a fantastic experience staying at the Chisos Basin Campgrounds. Will stay again in the future for sure. Clean bathrooms, courteous and informative park staff. Right on The Window Trail and a minute from the Lost Mine Trail.
