I've camped in big bend about 5 times now and 4 of those were spent at Chisos Basin. This is no doubt the best spot to camp in. The location puts you in the center of the park and has the best hiking destinations. Being in the center of the park also allows you to drive in either direction of the park toward Santa Elena Canyon or toward Rio Grande Village. I would always recommend staying here if you're visiting Big Bend.

Such a beautiful setting we enjoyed every minute at this campground. Ive said it before, you have to read the campsite description to see if it will work for you. If your giant van doesnt fit in a spot, its your fault, not the hosts. The single guy thats been a host there for ten years is a hoot and does such a great job. Site 32 is perfect for our camper truck, Tacoma, but again read the description. Great spot for the best hiking in the park. So glad to spend time there before it shuts down for 2 years!

Probably the best spot in the Chisos Basin Campground Area. Camping area is high above the others and offers an excellent view of the surrounding mountains and valley. If you are brining a trailer into the spot, regardless of the length, you WILL NEED a spotter due to the tightness of the parking area and the telephone pole guy wires. I would asses the spot before backing in. Also, when you do back a trailer in, come from the opposite direction, as the road is one way and use your spotter to guide you in. Coming from the opposite direction will make backing in much easier. Overall, it was a great spot, but it took a little bit to get backed in.

Very nice location with great views all around. We loved to see the sun sets and rise the following morning

I thoroughly enjoyed the area. However, there were a couple of issues:- There was a large wasp nest in spot 27.- In spot 29, adjacent to mine, there was a family with a small baby. While I didn't mind the baby waking up at 3 am and crying for an hour or two without the parents doing anything, what bothered me and others who complained to me was that the family played a white noise machine with ocean sounds very loudly from dawn till dusk without any pause. This prevented me from fully enjoying the natural sounds of the environment, such as the lovely animals at night.

Pretty! Was surprised by the rain, but prepared for it, so no problem.

Supreme as always. Loved staying in the basin! Im sure its been said many times but take extra notice of the SPECIFICALLY Chisos Basin weather station. We were prepared so this is a notice of caution for folks who might not know that the temperature in the basin can be wildly different from the rest of the park. 70F at the hot springs, 40F in the basin camp ground. This trip was especially wonderful because for the first time in over 20 yrs at Big Bend, we saw the BEARS!!!!! We were coming back from the south rim, going up the long straight as youre coming closer to Boot Rock before you turn left around the mountain and head back towards the Emory Peak junction on the trail. On the mountain side a little below and south of Boot Rock, we could see two cubs. They were very far away, little black dots amongst the green and grey foliage and rock. Got some photos zoomed in all the way and even then, theyre very tiny in frame. It was friggin magical and Ill never forget it. I love Big Bend so much, been going since I was an around 8yrs old and now I take my kids who are older than that.I cant ever find the words to describe the vast, greatness of it all. Truly a wonder to behold. Id also recommend digging into the geology of the park. Its pretty nuts how this place has formed itself over the past several hundred million years and even older. Have fun, be safe, respect park rules. Youll have a killer trip!

Beautiful site in the mountains. Short drive and walk from the trailheads and area store. The site was not the best for a tent, offered no dirt or grass to stake down, had to set it up on gravel.

Wonderful experience. Quiet campground, despite it being full. Hosts were available and present. We'll be back!

Our site had no place to pitch a tent. When I went to the rangers station to complain, Marge was very helpful and told me to contact the camp helpers. Mind you we were back country camping for three nights WAITING for this ONE NIGHT at this camp ground. So we go to see this couple that is the camp helpers or whatever their title was. Sign said they were ‘in’. They weren’t. We sat IN THE ONLY SHADE AVAILABLE at their picnic table. Apparently that set the woman off. As they arrived, this woman in the nastiest snotty way possible, asked ‘Do you need help???’ No. Sitting here for my health. Ignoring the snot, I explain my problem. Her response in FULL snot mode ‘what about the BACKSIDE’ What backside? She HUFFS off, as she stomps into our site she says ‘all you have to do is move the picnic table. How big is your TENT???’ Ummm… normal human size. Fits only 6- smaller than every tent we saw. She’s stomping around, I ask her if she knows how heavy the picnic table is and can we them just throw it up on the rocks since that’s the only place to put it and also since the ground is too hard to drive tent stakes, any advise on how to stake the tent since there are no moveable rocks in the site to help hold the tent in 20 kt winds? Her response ‘that’s what tenting in the desert is like’ I told her she’d been a help and now please leave. We LEFT BIG BEND!! We couldn’t even stay!! To what??? Sleep in the TRUCK?!?! I complained to the three rangers at Panther Junction on our way out. Did they do anything? Nope. Paid for a site, didn’t use it, and this WITCH gets to keep her “job”. Awesome. We drove back to Houston that day. SOOOOO Happy we went to Big Bend to suffer THAT.

Chisos Basin is awesome! Beautiful views from inside the basin and out to the window. The bathrooms, external sink area and dumpster areas are super clean. There's a reason this place books months and months in advance.

We had a great campsite. The only problem—ALMOST NOBODY wore masks, even in the bathrooms.

Absolutely beautiful and convenient to every part of Big Bend. I highly recommend this campground. Some sites have very small tent sites so be aware that space is at a premium.
