Enjoyed the sand dunes against the backdrop of the mountains. Visitors Center was worthwhile, and the film gave an excellent presentation of the area's history. Campground was set among the pinon pines, with adequate space between sites. A mix of 80% tents and 20% RVs. Only complaint was on our exit. Stopped at the dump station, intending fill our fresh tank. However, instead of a threaded hose connection which is required for such a fill via a hose, the water source hose was a smoothly welded connection that would work just fine filling a 5 gallon water container, but was useless for an RV. C'mon Sand Dunes, fix that!!

Great campsite! The cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen before.

Been coming here 20 years. Although more crowded than ever, its still an amazing place to come.

We loved our stay here! The campsite was well maintained and beautiful. We visited in July and there was literally NO ONE here so we had the whole place to ourselves for 48 hours. For those hoping for company or support, this would not be the best site. But since we wanted some peace and quiet and did not need any support, it was perfect. Beautiful short and long hikes from the area. We saw wildflowers, flowering cacti, deer, butterflies, one skunk (who minded his business), and one rattlesnake in the road on the drive out. Note: The reservation said that wifi was available at the ranger station, but the network appeared to be down so don't rely on that.

It was a great campsite overall! We had a great time, dispite the windy/rainy night. However, pay close attention to the POSTED speed limit. Your phone GPS will likely display the wrong speed. Got a pretty large ticket for going 10 over, by a park ranger. However it is still a great campsite! They have bear containers on the site that are pretty large in size. There are lots of chipmunks and deer at this campground. Overall a 5/5 experience campground wise. -2 points for the park ranger saying hed let us off with a warning and then giving a citation! Still a great time though and highly reccomend given the new information I have now.

The site that we reserved was not made for a trailer and a truck. It required jackknifing of our trailer, which was a no go. The campsite was was noisy up till midnight. Whoever designed the campsite flip-flopped a lot of the campsite so that you couldnt back into the site you had to turn into the site on a one way road. It was crazy. It was very upsetting. Our campsite also was tilted and was sloped d and we almost lost our trailer. This site was A12 and we wont be returning again.

Great experience! Facilities were clean and the staff Rangers were very nice and helpful. We had lots of wildlife around (deer, turkeys, coyotes) which made the trip even more fun. We had a great view of the dunes from our site and easy hiking trails to the dunes.

We had a great time at Pion Flats Campground! Beautiful views of the dunes and mountains made every moment feel special. The campground was clean, well-maintained, and had all the basic amenities we needed for a comfortable stay.

This campground is exceptionally well maintained and so convenient to access the sand dunes. The sites themselves are thoughtfully laid out and many offer privacy and shade. The facilities were literally cleaner and nicer than any campground Ive been in. Use the Dune Trail straight from the campground to head out to the sand. Its a beautiful walk, less crowded than the day use area and you can get to dunes faster than the main entrance. If youre visiting in the summer plan to check out the dunes first thing in the morning while it is cool. The sun and heat are intense during the day. You can also go out there at night which is spectacular with clear skies! Zapata Falls is a short drive away and is a nice option during the heat of the day- its an easy one-mile hike to the water. Plan to get your feet wet and bring the kiddos and dogs so everyone can cool off.

My only complaint is that the Recreation.gov site description isn't accurate regarding the site sizes. Ours was listed as a 6x6 and there was much more room than that, we would have brought a larger tent had we known. Bathrooms were kept clean and the bear boxes were big enough to store all of our potential bear treats.

We had such a lovely stay at Pion Flats! It was both affordable and gave us front-row seats to the incredible Great Sand Dunes. The bathrooms were nice and clean and our neighbors were all lovely. Highly recommend this spot to any adventurer or weary traveler.

We really likes our camp site, an the campground. It is clean, it was quiet and family friendly.We were not prepared for the heavy wind that's coming up at night. We hat very heavy wind both nights an ot ripped off our tent. Out nights were very uncomfortable.That nothing the NPS is responsible for.

It'd be nice if they had showers. The store outside the park has nice showers for $10. The spot was nice. Clean. Bathrooms were nice and clean. Rangers were friendly. Noise was a bit of an issue sometimes near group camp. But I was so high that nothing could bother me. Great park. Good campground.

You are not allowed to hang things from the trees. I had a mosquito net that would have been helpful but had to take it down. Mosquitoes were not horrible but they were around. Sites are close together. Views are lovely. We saw rangers during the day checking on things but not at quiet hours which was unfortunate because we had very loud neighbors 2/3 nights that carried on late into the night.

Fantastic site with a view of the dunes, the mountains, and shade!
@JenniferN22326 · Camped on Jul 5, 2025 at Campsite #61
This spot is right next to the bathrooms and camp host, so it is not as quiet or dark as it could be, particularly if the camp host runs generators or fans into the night.
@DebbieGF6D3DAB · Camped on Jul 5, 2025 at Campsite #81
The campground bathrooms are clean. Mosquitoes were bad. Store was not open three of our four night stay.
@SarahC1505024 · Camped on Jul 4, 2025 at Campsite #44
Clean bathrooms, great views at almost all the sites, rangers were always out and monitoring sites. Camp store and firewood delivery were nice.
@TamaraZ0F30A01 · Camped on Jul 4, 2025 at Campsite #71
The setting was beautiful but the mosquitoes were large and vicious. We stayed in loop A one night and loop B the second night. In both areas there were campers that didn't follow the quiet hours. I'm glad we stayed there but I wouldn't stay there again.

Good little tent site, be advised the parking is small and parallel.

@ChazInSoCal - CA

I just used PerfectCamp.com to book six consecutive August nights at the most popular campsite in one of the most popular campgrounds in Humboldt Redwoods State Park in California. That is not anything I could have accomplished anywhere else with the ease I did here! Thank you, PerfectCamp! I LOVE this site! You will find me on several other camping sites but the design, format, functionality, and personality of this the best. It’s fresh and clean.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
