Loved this campground. Close to the trail to the dunes and a hilly trail for dune views.

I pull a 16' camper trailer with my 20' truck. The main campground road, Loop 2, is a little narrow especially for backing my trailer into a spot. This is especially true when you put guards along the side of the road. Not sure there's much you can do about it though but you might note the narrow roadway in your campground description.

Great scenery with deer wandering through the campground. Good trail from the campground to the dunes.

Lovely visit. Just wish there were more designated paths to bathrooms from sites that arent that close.

The bad parts were very small sites, bigger rigs don't fit and getting into the spaces is difficult for even medium size RVS. That said, we loved the park which we could see the dunes from our site. Not far to relatively clean toilets with icy cold water to wash hands. There was a tiny store so stock up on supplies before you get there. Gets cold at night so bring your own firewood if you can.

Enjoyed the sand dunes against the backdrop of the mountains. Visitors Center was worthwhile, and the film gave an excellent presentation of the area's history. Campground was set among the pinon pines, with adequate space between sites. A mix of 80% tents and 20% RVs. Only complaint was on our exit. Stopped at the dump station, intending fill our fresh tank. However, instead of a threaded hose connection which is required for such a fill via a hose, the water source hose was a smoothly welded connection that would work just fine filling a 5 gallon water container, but was useless for an RV. C'mon Sand Dunes, fix that!!

The park is amazing and all sites are very good. The dunes are spectacular as well as the mountain vistas. The trails are great and offer great views of the dune field and the valley. The only downside is the water fill station, which cannot fill an RV that requires a hose connection.

This was our 1st time camping here at Pinon Flats. We were at site 75. I don't think I would camp here again. The camp sites are spaced too close together, the tent pad was a bit awkward next to the firepit. Neighbors were very loud up past 2am, I did talk to the host and voice my concerns, he did go and talk to them. I know it's summer and I expect bugs to be out but there were so many here, it was ridiculous. The creek was dried up. It was an overall bad experience.

Buggy and bathrooms are a walk. You have to go to the outside wash station to get soap. Clean though, and quiet.

9/27 -28/2022 Great Sand Dunes N.P is a great place to visit. Pinon Flats is a "mostly" pleasant place to camp however, the 91 campsites are packed into a small area making the campground seem crowded. There are no trash dumpsters in the campground, but dumpsters and a recycling station are near the campground entrance. Plenty of clean restrooms with flush toilets, as well as a dishwashing station, and a water spigot next to each restroom are all positives. Free dump stations are available for RV's to empty their sewage tanks. With several 14,000' peaks in the area the views are amazing and the night sky is unbelievable. It feels like you could almost reach up, and touch the stars. There was a LONG, HARD rain the night of the 27th, so Medano Creek was flowing in the morning. Sadly, the visitor center was closed for renovation. Be aware that if you plan to visit the Sand Dunes from May all the way through summer you need to make campground reservations six months to the day prior to your visit.

We stayed at site 75 and had family next to us at site 77. We like how there were trails between camps to run up to the restrooms. Be mindful of the prickly pear cactus and fire ants. The restrooms were clean and very nice. Be sure to bring soap and towels. The family restroom has no inside lock, be sure to knock before entering. Definitely use guidelines on your tent because the weather can provide some strong gusts. We did not use the dune trail but chose to drive to the primitive/horse trailer parking area to hike to Medano Creek and the Dunes. The park rangers were visible and friendly. We greatly enjoyed all the pinyon trees in the campground creating separate spaces for each site. Sometimes campers ran their generators but the noise was not terrible. Our last night, we were woken by an animal making munching sounds just outside of our tent. We thought it could be a bear. Upon further inspection, it was a deer eating charcoal out of our fire ring. Use the bear box and keep a clean site to protect yourself and others from bear visits. We were unable to use our fire ring at our site due to our tent being larger. We used site 77s ring for cooking and ambiance. The camp store was great for ice and other convenience items. The visitor center was always busy. You will have to pay $25 for a weeks worth of entry. They tape your receipt to a map of the park. Keep it handy so you can get back in after visiting Zapata Falls, Hooper or Alamosa. The Great Sand Dunes is so magical and Pinyon Flats was a wonderful campground to stay while experiencing the majesty of the Dunes.

Camping at National Parks right now is crowded, that's just how it is, but I really believe this campground is worth the effort for reservations. Park staff were so pleasant and happy to be there. The camp sites are surrounded by trees, and walking distance to the dunes. The bathrooms were always clean, flush toilets, yay! There are lots of people camping close together, but kindness to your neighbor goes a long way to a good camp trip, and the sunsets over the dunes and stars at night can't be beat. I've been camping here since I was a kid, and we've always had a great time!

Our Campsite was spotless. Our Camping experience was phenomenal. And most importantly, the Campground Host was SUCH a nice man. And I felt very safe and protected when I purchased souvenirs from the Visitor Center Store Window. Thank you Great Sand Dunes for having us!!!
