Beautiful campground. Lots of hiking trails and the camp spots are not crowded. Employees and hosts were very nice. If you are looking for perfection, here are things that could be better...there were a lot of dogs and a decent amount of barking/noise (you'll get this most everywhere that allows pets...I get it). The mobile reception was terrible, so don't rely on it. We had Starlink, which helped a lot, but the beautiful tree canopy made finding a lot of open sky a challenge. We found enough to do basic functions...texting, checking email, etc. Voice calls were tough due to limited sky at our spot and most spots had a lot of tree canopy, so you sacrifice a little connectivity for the gorgeous setting. Finally, the bath and shower house in our loop (lake loop) didn't have much capacity. Thankfully, with a full hookup and a tankless water heater, we used our camper bathroom/shower and didn't need the public facilities. I'm told the beach bottom in the water is pretty mucky, although we did not use it. The lake is pretty though.Those are, in my mind, minor gripes. Overall, probably the best spot we've camped at yet.

Very pleasantly surprised. My favorite of three national park campgrounds on this trip. Although i did not find a utility wash sink I was pleasantly surprised to have showers at our restroom, large private stalls, and working bear boxes. The facilities were well maintained, friendly staff, and ice and firewood for sale on arrival at the gate. excellent experience. **bonus nearby 'in town' restaurants, conveniences, cell service and the stunning North Carolina Arboretum

Great campground. Lots of room between campers. Very private for a campground. Convenient to Asheville.

Beautiful campground with lots of space and greenery between sites. The sewer for our site, #39,was fairly high and the sewer hose had to elevated for proper drainage. Bathrooms and showers were separate and setup for one person at a time. Staff was very friendly and helpful. For things to do, check out Lexington Glassworks in Asheville and the town of Black Mountain. For hikers, the Lookout Trail near Black Mountain provides scenic views of the area

It was a great place to explore either hiking or biking.

We like Powhatan because of its easy access from Asheville and I-26. We had a nice private tent site #059 on the Hard Times loop. Good flat area for our tent, nice fire ring, shepherd's hook all there. The bath house was clean and accessible easily from our site. Check-in people and other staff very friendly. We had to leave early due to the rain forecast, otherwise would have stayed. Our only complaint is the number of dogs in the sites around us...although they did quit barking once night came.

This was our first time camping at Lake Powhatan, and we had a bit of a mixed experience.On the positive side, our campsite was clean upon arrival, and the bear boxes provided were a useful amenity. The lake and beach looked nice, although it wasn't open for the season yet during our visit.However, there were a few areas that impacted our stay. The bathhouse facilities felt quite small given the number of sites and campers they served in the loops. We also encountered a challenging situation with what appeared to be a squatter across from our site. They had frequent visitors who, unfortunately, used our site for parking. While we overheard staff addressing the situation initially telling them they had to leave, it seemed they were later permitted to stay longer. This couple was disruptive at times with loud noise that carried late into the night and early morning, including what sounded like a domestic dispute. While the staff we interacted with were nice, this specific incident raised some concerns. Finally, we had no cell signal at our campsite and didn't regain service until we were back on the main road, which is something to be aware of.Overall, while there were some good points like the clean site and bear boxes, the issues with the neighboring campers, the size of the bathhouses, and the lack of cell service did detract from our experience.We won't write off the park completely, we'll give it another try in the somewhat distant future.

Asheville is pulling together after Helene, but the campground is in fantastic shape (and most of the city is, also). Please come to Lake Powhatan and Asheville!

We stayed two nights at the campground for our visit to the Biltmore house. It was very convenient, only a 20 minute drive. Easy access to I-26 and downtown. I think the campground was the quietest I have ever stayed. The park seemed very well maintained and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Having large showers was an unexpected treat. Sites are limited for larger RV access due to the tight roads that most national parks have. I highly recommend the park.

Campground offers a serene and scenic environment perfect for a relaxing getaway. The campsites are spacious and well-maintained, providing ample privacy. However, the bathrooms leave something to be desired, with only two single bathrooms available for the whole area, broken showers, and just one working sink. Despite these limitations, the overall experience is enjoyable, especially for those who appreciate a natural, rustic setting

Nice quite spot, clean, but narrow roads

Very nice campground. Spacious sites, friendly staff, beautiful location. Close to all the Asheville tourist attractions. We have a Class A motorhome and found the roads from the interstate to the campground challenging. They are narrow and winding.

My reserved site was still occupied at check in time. I don't understand how this happens. The staff was great though and recommended changing to a site that actually was better than my original one. The trail system is wonderful with miles of hiking.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
