We had reserved A27 and someone was set up there when we arrived. The camp host was great about moving us to C loop. The day after we arrived fire broke out in the park and we had to evacuate around noon. So sad for the park as it looked beautiful. Staff was excellent at notifying us that we had to pack up and leave immediately.

We were evacuated in a calm, efficient manner that saved us and our property from damage.

It is with a sad heart that we write this review, as we may have been some of the last people to camp here before the South Rim Wildfire (our checkout was the morning the fire started, and we were woken by and witness to several lightning storms - with little to no rain - throughout the early hours and typical waking hours of that morning, all right above our heads). The campground overall has tight site spots, very hard to fit even two tents, but our spot had plenty of space and was perfectly situated close to the trail that takes you to the Visitor Center, which was a wonderful hike itself (our site was visited by several deer, chipmunks, and birds probably because we were backed onto a trail). We felt tucked away from others driving into the loop (C), and had enough shade to cover our tent for at least half the day - some other sites had a little path from the parking spot to the tent pad, and these seemed to also provide that cozy "tucked away" feel. Loops were one-way, vault toilets only, drinkable water, dumpster and mixed recycling available as you left your loop. We hope that the sites are somewhat recoverable in the future and that they can be used for camping once again.

Great experience overall - staff at the visitor center had very kind & practical advice about the Gunnison hike to the river. We were camping at the bottom of the canyon when the lightning strikes at ~3:30am early Thursday July 10th lit the north rim and south rim fires. The park began evacuations about 20 minutes after we climbed out Thursday late morning.

Campsites were nice despite some having a strange layout, Facilities provided were clean and well stocked. Bear lockers provided at every site were clean and large enough to hold all of our supplies. Rim Rock trail was right next to our loop leading to the visitor center and Montrose was 20 minutes away when we did need to go into town. Short drive to all the south rim activities

Great site! Nice private space, and not too close to neighboring sites. Very close to trailhead for trail that goes to the visitor center.

Decent campsite, though not tons of space. Walk down to canyon view was excellent.

Nice campground and very convenient place to stay while visiting the park.

Site B012 on loop B; had electric which was very much appreciated given the day time temps. full campground but quiet. some shade. able to level the RV without too much difficulty.

Black Canyon is gorgeous. That said, the South Rim campground was pretty crowded. Neighbors were playing loud music - is that a thing? Found peace and quite at the North Rim, though. (Campground was sparsely populated.) Took Pinon Route into the canyon. It was well worth the effort. Just beautiful.

The overall campground is lovely and the canyon itself is amazing. Facilities were clean and the spaces were well managed (trash, water, signage). This specific campsite is functional but also quite small. The tent area is surrounded by trees and brush on three sides this is great when the wind kicks up, but its otherwise challenging to get a moderately sized tent set up. Also, note that the fire pit is immediately next to the tent space, so keep that in mind in terms of smoke and such. Loop C is nice in general, but wed look for a different campsite if we were staying again. Lastly, note that cell coverage is pretty terrible throughout the park, but the public Wi-Fi at the visitors center was fantastic and fast.

Nice campground, clean toilets, would stay again.

Black Canyon blew us away! Make sure you have enough time to see all of the overlooks and do some hiking. The biodiversity here was super interesting, in addition to all the geological features. We loved Dragon Point especially.

Nice campground. Loved that you can access the Rim trail right from the campground. Night sky was fantastic.

Black Canyon was well maintained and the site was nice. Staff was uniformly helpful and cheery. A great park, and a fine campground.

The campground spaces are situated as to be nicely separated and secluded. The restrooms are basic - pit toilet with hand sanitizer, but access from campsites is difficult without traveling through others sites. Potable water was available and appreciated for filling drinking bottles.
@JamesG6676411 · Camped on Jun 28, 2025 at Campsite #C15
Great location but the campsites are too close to one another (there should be fewer sites per loop) and there are not enough pit toilets.
@ChadT139952BDD · Camped on Jun 27, 2025 at Campsite #A13
Great secluded camp site. I liked the separate space for the tent which was big enough for a 4 person tent (with room to spare). The bathrooms were about a 2 minute walk and were very clean and smelled fresh and even had hand sanitizer. There was potable water at the front of the loop road. Overall I would highly recommend site A13. There was no cell service for ATT or Tmobile at the camp site.

This was a great campground that was nice and quiet. At night, after the moon went down, you could see billions of stars. The water is at the front of each loop, and the pit toilets were clean and didn't smell. Unfortunately due to budget cuts, they were not able to have Ranger programs at night. They have bear storage containers that are easy to use. We got up early to complete the hikes because in the afternoon it would be hot.

Camping in the park was convenient and we loved our campsite. There are no showers or running water so be prepared for that.

C17 was a great shady spot
@BarryA3600B238 · Camped on Jun 26, 2025 at Campsite #A29
The campsites were nice and the canyon itself was amazing. However, we were bummed out that the park was promised as a true dark sky park but there was a lot of glow coming from Montrose.
@AMYS5542485 · Camped on Jun 25, 2025 at Campsite #C8
Campground is pretty bare bones. Most sites are small, some are close to the road and some are set back a bit into the trees. This site had a small bit of shade at the back of the site but was otherwise mostly in the sun.

Love The Black Canyon!!!I wish we could have shower houses in this park.( I realize water is an issue at The Black Canyon - I can still wish for it!!!)

@ChazInSoCal - CA

I just used PerfectCamp.com to book six consecutive August nights at the most popular campsite in one of the most popular campgrounds in Humboldt Redwoods State Park in California. That is not anything I could have accomplished anywhere else with the ease I did here! Thank you, PerfectCamp! I LOVE this site! You will find me on several other camping sites but the design, format, functionality, and personality of this the best. It’s fresh and clean.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
