It is with a sad heart that we write this review, as we may have been some of the last people to camp here before the South Rim Wildfire (our checkout was the morning the fire started, and we were woken by and witness to several lightning storms - with little to no rain - throughout the early hours and typical waking hours of that morning, all right above our heads). The campground overall has tight site spots, very hard to fit even two tents, but our spot had plenty of space and was perfectly situated close to the trail that takes you to the Visitor Center, which was a wonderful hike itself (our site was visited by several deer, chipmunks, and birds probably because we were backed onto a trail). We felt tucked away from others driving into the loop (C), and had enough shade to cover our tent for at least half the day - some other sites had a little path from the parking spot to the tent pad, and these seemed to also provide that cozy "tucked away" feel. Loops were one-way, vault toilets only, drinkable water, dumpster and mixed recycling available as you left your loop. We hope that the sites are somewhat recoverable in the future and that they can be used for camping once again.

Great site! Nice private space, and not too close to neighboring sites. Very close to trailhead for trail that goes to the visitor center.

Such a beautiful park! We do the hike to the bottom of the canyon. So glad we did. But it was one of the toughest we have ever done.

Wonderful campground, Loop C was great and we were super close to the rim trail. Spectacular views especially at sunset and early in the morning.

Location and site were great! Close to the restroom. Site was well maintained and private due to the foliage.

We tent camped at a number of NPS campgrounds this July, and in comparison Gunnison made the bottom of the list. The hosts were wonderful, but it's a busy busy campground. Though the sites look secluded the sounds carries from all over the whole campground, so you can hear everything all night. There's no real running water for washing dishes, but then there's not a good place to dispose of any grey water you may create. The water they do have is brought in so quite limited. We'd grown used to water, and flush as opposed to pit toilets at all of the other NPS campsites. Though not a big deal, it was less than ideal in comparison. Really though, the major issue isn't as much about the camping as the visitor center. Not enough parking for a place that is both the main information hub AND the start of some trail heads. This resulted in a number of people angrily double parking and blocking in others. None of this is to say that it wasn't worth it, but you will want to get your expectations in check. On the good side, the trail to the visitor center from the campground goes right along the edge of the canyon and is gorgeous. While the view of the stars at night was one of the most specataular we saw.
