We had a reservation at a nearby campground that was cancelled due to a water main break. Recreation.gov showed 4 sites available at Black Canyon Campground. I tried booking each of the 4 separately but had the same issue. Once I went to checkout i received an error message that "this site is already reserved and unavailable". This is even though it showed 'available' throughout every step until checkout. I waited until the following day to see if something was amiss with the website. This time it showed two sites available. One did the same thing as the day prior. I was able to book the other site, #11. Upon arrival, #11 had only a pullover spot to park our van and it was only about 6 feet wide. So our van was in the middle of the road. Amongst other concerns, everyone walking the campground passed withing inches. It was also on a significant hill, very far from level. Steps led to a table and tent site, but we stay in our van. The photo was of the table/tent site only. This was exceptionally unacceptable but since we had nowhere else to go and it was 7 pm..... Recreation.gov charges a fee for themselves. I expect an accurate website, not showing sites are available when they are not. I also expect that unacceptable situations to be revealed. Our van is a standard size van. Anyone in a small RV or larger could not have stayed there as it would have blocked the road. This is the first negative experience I have ever had booking a site in many states. Transparency of what to expect can alleviate a lot of issues.

Love the park and it is very well maintained. My only reason for giving it a 3 star review is that the caterpillar outbreak was so bad we had to leave a day early. The email that was sent out didnt explain how bad it was. It was raining poisonous caterpillars. There was no escaping them and as a result we were not able to enjoy the beautiful area.

We love spending time at Black Canyon. It is such a beautiful place and the camping sites are all very nice. The camp hosts are friendly and helpful.

This campground should be closed because of the worm infestation at campground. They are literally falling by the hundreds from the trees above. Camp somewhere else not worth it .

We happened to be there during a Douglas fir caterpillar super outbreak. Caterpillars covered everything - table, stove, tent, chairs, luckily didn't get into our tent, but it was super creepy.

There's no water! JK, there hasn't been water in 15 years. Still a great spot, hope the price doesn't go up too much next year.

This is a very short walk in campsite. Very nice tent pad area, lots of shade. Large picnic table and fire ring nearby. Observed Audubon's Warbler, Western Tanager, and Steller's Jay close up. Other campers claimed it to be the best birding in the Taos Area.

A generally clean and well maintained campground. Men's bathroom on the back loop was 'temporarily' out-of-order on my most recent visit, still no water available on site but I bring my own. One of the quietest NF campgrounds I have had the opportunity to stay at, aways enjoy the camping experience there. Appreciated the higher altitude location of this campground with the above average temperatures in Santa Fe this early summer, will probably change my future visits to May to take advantage of the cooler weather.

Bathrooms are clean and easily available. Sites are neat and picked up, good fire pits and walls in camp sites add to privacy. Good spacing between spots.

There is no water in the campground and its been out for years! Also no date on when they expect it to be working, take several 6 gal water containers

Nice spot close to Santa Fe. Lots of trails in the area and lots of space between camp sites.

Beautiful well maintained sites built into the hills. Fun biking up the canyon and playing in the stream.

Great campground, not too big, under 40 sites. Most sites are fairly secluded, clean and quiet.
@JanetK7081807 · Camped on May 12, 2025 at Campsite #11
Do NOT book site 11 as there is only parking for a motorcycle. Campground hostess was most helpful to relocate to a first come/first serve site. There should be a notation about the parking being across the road from site 11!!

Beautiful camp, camp hosts were very helpful and kind. Each camp site was clearly marked and clean

A very nice campground. Clean. Feels very much in the remote forest for being so close to Sante Fe.

Our site, #16, was very nice with easy back-in. There was plenty of room for our 25' Class C. The only issue we had was there is no water in the park due to infrastructure issues that are being worked on. So, there is no water available in the area. We were able to dump at the Hyde Memorial State Park dump station about 1/2 mile up the road. The rangers need to unlock the gate for you and the fee is $10. We would come back here because it is a beautiful, quiet campground and an easy drive into Santa Fe.

Nothing wrong at all with campground but our site was double booked! Thank goodness for the wonderful host who helped us get situated in a new spot! We had driven 9 hours and if turned away I am not sure what we would have done!

Nice secluded walking sites, camp host was great. Still dont know why national parks wont fix the water issues, lack of water for the past 5 years

Campsites were a little tight for our 21 ft trailer, but the campground was beautiful. Hope you can get the water turned on soon!

I stayed 2 nights, a week apart, and found the campground adequate, with minimal facilities. The pit toilet was relatively clean; there was no water anywhere on the site. The second night, I discovered my campsite inhabited by a man-- with his tent canopy erected, roaring fire, and all his stuff out on the table. He'd been there some time, despite the fact that the post clearly showed the site to be reserved by me. I asked him why he was in my campsite, and he pretended he didn't see the reservation paper on the post , and assumed it was first come, first served--- but he agreed to clear out ; it took about half an hour. Clearly there is no oversight here, and no way to assure that people cannot just camp wherever they want. Considering there is no water at all, it was definitely overpriced, but the location near Santa Fe was very convenient.

Great location close to Santa Fe with nice hiking trails. The walk-in sites are a little close to the road (can hear the cars driving by at night), but they offer a good amount of privacy.Very affordable for the amenities offered. We didn't have any issues with the caterpillars, only saw two of them in two days.
@PierreSB824BDA · Camped on Jul 30, 2024 at Campsite #16
Beautiful CG with plenty of shade and cooler temps. Our experience was dampened by the infestation of caterpillars which is of no fault of anyone. They got on everything so we had to wipe them off all stuff before leaving. Host was very nice and knowledgeable. Well be back.

I just used PerfectCamp.com to book six consecutive August nights at the most popular campsite in one of the most popular campgrounds in Humboldt Redwoods State Park in California. That is not anything I could have accomplished anywhere else with the ease I did here! Thank you, PerfectCamp! I LOVE this site! You will find me on several other camping sites but the design, format, functionality, and personality of this the best. It’s fresh and clean.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
