When I drove in, I knew we had chosen the perfect place. Surrounded by nature, regrets, and herons hunting. It was beautiful. The paved sites made it easy to set up. It was quite windy during our stay and chilly. I joked the the one liner review would request they turn down the wind. But, be prepared for a breeze. Make sure canopies are tied and weighted. There's a bike path at the beginning of the campground and it goes through a prairie that was just starting to bloom. It's going to be gorgeous at the end of June through August or September.There are Sandhil Cranes, nesting Bald Eagles, frogs, turtles and snakes. Many of the other campers we met, come here often. I can see why. It's peaceful and immersed in nature. Pull up a comfy chair and just enjoy nature.The bathrooms are in good condition.

This is one of our favorite places to camp. So much wildlife to view including the Eagles and the eagle nest.

We stayed in Potter South on a spot that extends into the Mississippi. The site boasted glorious-white pelicans, yellow beaked egrets, great blue herons, geese parents guiding goslings out to explore and feed, cranes, 2 eagles supporting each other on a nest. There were an adult and an adolescent beaver working on their home and an abundance of turtles. Our grape jelly feeder brought in many orioles but our hummingbird feeder was less frequented. The bike trails were well maintained and offered a mix of forest and prairie environments. The little town of Thomson had few amenities except a drive-in for burgers and ice cream but the larger town of Clinton Iowa, a 20 minute drive away, had all the stores and recreation of any urbanized area. We have already reserved the same site for August this year.

Thomson Causeway is a favorite campground. This year they have improved many of the pads to new cement pads. Most of the sites have both water and electric and shade. Can't beat the sunsets.

Thomson Causeway, an Army Corp of Engineers campground is a wonderful place to camp. Camping pads are cement. Many have water hookups. Ours had 50 amp service as well as 30. The cost is exceptionally reasonable (less than State parks). The view at sunset over the Missisdippi was stunning. I just wish people understood camping etiquette.

All the campsites are nice but, it would be helpful to have some sites that don't require a reservation.

Our first time at Thomson Causeway. We spent the last week of the 24 season in site 114. Stunning location. Very pleasantly surprised to fine water at each site. Most sites were well spaced. Paved roads with level concrete pads. Restroom's were clean and supplied. Close proximity(~20 min) to Clinton IA for whatever you need. Verizon coverage was sufficient. Well be back!!

One of our favorite campgrounds! The park is well maintained and the sites are clean and level. The sites along the river are a little tight but we still had plenty of room and a great sunset!
@JaniceFFDC2852 · Camped on Oct 6, 2024 at Campsite #36
We love having both water at our campsite. The concrete pad was level, no need to use leveling devices. The washrooms are always very clean and always work. The sites are spacious and have ample room between them. It's peaceful and quiet, so Nature's sounds are easily heard. Thomson is our favorite campground.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
