I love Whitney Portal campground. & the whole Whitney vibe in general. I hike Mt. Whitney every year & love the convenience of this CG. Props to Bob, who is the best campground host ever!

Great experience. Perfectly situated for Whitney hikeras.

The campsite we reserved (#39) was not really the best for us, as there was a steep dropoff from the campground road to the camp spot, making hauling a 50# ice chest down to the bear box a little treacherous. Otherwise it didn't seem like a bad spot. We ended up not staying there because--despite having a valid reservation at that site, for that night--someone else's name was on the campsite card on the post for that night. Guessing it was a clerical error, but I didn't want to deal with the thought of someone else coming in late at night expecting that spot. Since we were sleeping in the van anyway, and just really needed a place to park and secure our food without picking our way down a steep trail in the dark, we just moved on.

Phenomenal campground - couldn't ask for a better location and amenities.

This reservation worked well despite the challenges of actually getting a permit in the face of much demand. A challenge is to indicate all the campsites where we might stay on a multi-day hike without having pre-planned all the sites and having those locations at hand.

Honestly the best experience at a Campground in recent memory. Clean and well maintained, professional but friendly host, and of course fantastic views. The elevation keeps it cool -- for some even cold so be prepared.

This campsite is particularly friendly for those who are tent camping. There are not a lot of sites which fit large RVs and thus you do not have to have the sound of generators destroying your appreciation of the sounds of nature. Most of the sites are well spaced which can make moving supplies around a bit arduous but adds to the feeling of isolation.

Larger site next to river. The hiking path goes right by the side and there is not privacy from neighbors. You can fit two tents but maybe not 2 cars unless they are small. The river is really nice :). Not all sites have enough room for 2 tents.

Nice campground. Friendly hosts. If you want to get to bed super-early, dont pick this site.Campers next to us got up at 1 am to start hiking and used super-bright lantern to get ready!
@LuciaS012D585F · Camped on Aug 6, 2025
This is not really the campgrounds fault, but camping is more enjoyable when people dont use super-bright lanterns at night.

Awesome campground and location! Im going back. The food & people at the Portal Store are wonderful. Being able to hike to Lone Pine Lake without a permit is great. The hike from the campground to the Portal Store, along the creek, is amazing.

Stayed at site 39 on the edge of the campground and it was wonderful. You have to walk your things into the site since it's down the hill a bit, but the ambiance makes it worth it. Highly recommend this campground especially for the night before hiking.

Site 7 is not level at all. Very steep to back in to spot and van was in the sun all day. The camp site is shaded in parts you just have to move around to stay in the shade. Biting flies were bad and you really needed to wear pants and long sleeve shirts. Site 6 tent site is very close to our parking spot in site 7. Lots of bear activity as site 6 had their car door opened by a bear. We did not see or hear anything even with windows open. Stayed here so I could hike to the summit.

Very spacious campsite secluded from the main group of campsites. There was some cellphone reception.(Verizon)

A very pretty setting, but some of the paved spurs were crumbling away. There were also large rocks on the edge of the site making it more difficult to park.
@DeniseS8638623 · Camped on Jul 21, 2025 at Campsite #23
The Whitney Portal campground was nice and clean with level sites. The only downside was that it was about a 20 minute walk from the Whitney Portal Store and restaurant.

Very clean.

Beautiful location and great clean, well kept campsites. The campground hosts were really helpful and friendly too. I had the best stay here and would definitely like to return. One really wild thing happened though - a bear opened my car door and had a look inside! I didn't have any food inside the car but it must have still been curious, and left a few paw prints on my seat and interior. Fortunately it did not cause any damage, but it's a good reminder to use the food storage lockers at each campsite (I used them). Great experience overall and I'm so appreciative of this campground.

Lovely environment. Clean campsites. Most all campers respect lights out at night.

@ChazInSoCal - CA

I just used PerfectCamp.com to book six consecutive August nights at the most popular campsite in one of the most popular campgrounds in Humboldt Redwoods State Park in California. That is not anything I could have accomplished anywhere else with the ease I did here! Thank you, PerfectCamp! I LOVE this site! You will find me on several other camping sites but the design, format, functionality, and personality of this the best. It’s fresh and clean.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
