Great campsite with clean bathroom facilities and minimal noise. My only gripe is the choking smoke coming off of some fellow camper's bonfires. It was like camping in near a wildfire. I highly suggest camping higher up the valley, as the smoke tends to settle downwards.

Site 7 is not level at all. Very steep to back in to spot and van was in the sun all day. The camp site is shaded in parts you just have to move around to stay in the shade. Biting flies were bad and you really needed to wear pants and long sleeve shirts. Site 6 tent site is very close to our parking spot in site 7. Lots of bear activity as site 6 had their car door opened by a bear. We did not see or hear anything even with windows open. Stayed here so I could hike to the summit.

This campsite is a beautiful mountain paradise featuring dry camping for tents and RVs. Each site is nestled among huge boulders, pine trees and a stream nearby. All campsites have a fire ring, picnic bench and bear box for food storage. The entire site was sparkling clean, no trash left behind or found on trails due to respectful guests and diligent camp host. Bathroom were always clean and stocked. Best of all, this is a quiet and serene setting, the rush of winds through the pines and sounds of the stream are enchanting!

1. The campground is laid out along a mildly steep drainage, with sites interspersed among boulders and trees. I admire the people who designed the campground, and those who maintain it. 2. We arrived to find our camp site clean, and the sandy soil was freshly raked. 3. The toilet facilities set a new high standard for Forest Service pit toilets. They were amazingly clean.
The people managing Whitney Portal this year are doing a fantastic job.
The campground water spigots were functioning, dispensing potable water.
If you hike the Mount Whitney trail, bring your permit and water bottle, and carry a Wag Bag for your poop (available from the trailhead). If you're not trying for Mount Whitney, enjoy the Meysan Lakes trail.
