Just to remind everyone, bears are very active here. I had paw prints in my camp. But to the point, a bear snagged a neighbor camper's backpack off the table while the campers were present and prepping at 12:30am for their Mt Whitney hike. Please protect your stuff, especially in the nighttime hours. Otherwise, a great campground, one of the best!

I've been camping at Mt Whitney for over 40 years. A few years back was a little rough since we didn't have a lot of water/snow up there, but this year was outstanding and the streams were full of fish. There were 10-12 just in the pool near our tent, and it seemed that every other pool had at least 1-2 too. Maybe they just stocked the streams before we got there? For those who have never been, there's quite a lot to do. You can go to the fish hatchery, hike in the Alabama Hills, hike up to Lone Pine Lake, Fish (der), visit the fabulous waterfall, go to the Movie Museum (a ton of movies were filmed in the Alabama Hills). Don't forget to go to the Frosty Chalet too, it's a town legend. Don't worry if you forgot some food, actually you can do all of your grocery shopping with a fully stocked grocery store in Lone Pine.

Great campground hosted by Bob, who is awesome. A couple of issues...-Not all the sites can easily fit even a 4 person tent, or are very level if you could fit a tent. In reviewing maybe half the sites that were empty, I'd say maybe 3 or 4 would have this issue (out of 20). So do your homework if you are bringing anything other than a 2-4 person tent.-The dimensions listed for the bear lockers are way off. They state 50x18x18 (which will not fit anything other than about a 40qt cooler due to the height and depth dimensions) Actually, the inside dimensions of all lockers are 48" X 30"X 36". I easily fit a 72 qt, and a 52qt cooler , plus a bunch of boxes and bags.

Just a beautiful place nestled below the trailhead to Mt Whitney. For me its a spiritual place.

Emily and Bob were great camp hosts. They blessed us every day they were there. However, when they took a day off, no one was around to help. If there was someone, we couldn't find them. Campsites were clean and picked up. Bathrooms were also very presentable. Too many times we noticed that people never showed up to their campsite that they reserved. This makes it frustrating for those that pull up to an empty site and can't get a space. Maybe the system should go back to a first come first serve campsite.

Above the smoke! Nice campsites and well maintained. Great location for hiking. Order the pancakes at the cafe at your own risk... they are huge!

I've been to the Whitney Portal campground for two years in a row. It's one of the nicest areas in the Eastern Sierra. Lone Pine Creek flowing through gives a pleasant sound of running water, and the fishing is excellent. Lots of hiking trails in the area and a refreshing, relaxing break from the heat and crowds of the valleys below.

Falling asleep to the sound of the creek while gently swinging in my hammock was a highlight. The campsite was clean as were the restrooms. Make sure you keep all your food in the bear boxes, the bears are vigilant.
