The campground is remote and nestled at the base of the mountain. The deer watches us from across the meadow every evening. The campers were all quiet and respectful. The hike was magnificent, wild flowers, waterfalls and a lake. Fishing in the Purgatoir river was not successful due to many branches in the water. North Lake is 15 minutes from the campground. This is a lovely campground to escape the hustle and enjoy nature to it's fullest. There is a water pump behind the bathrooms by the trailhead. You will need a container to tote the water because there is not a connection for a hose. We filled our tank up at the Monument Lake Resort for $6.00. There are bear proof trash cans for your kitchen waste. Mark, the host was very helpful. Space 9 has room for only one vehicle if you are in an RV.

It was a beautiful area. The host, Mark, was so helpful and just a pleasure to talk to. It took a day to adjust to the altitude (9800 ft) but after that it was just wonderful.

Site #2 is awesome! Your Site 3 neighbor is the camp host and there is only one other campsite nearby on the other side of the road. Lots of new Aspen clones sprouting up all around. Very private!

Site was great, the parking space was a bit tight, but it worked great for a small camper. Access to the creek behind the site made it a beautiful location. The afternoon sun was brutal, so be prepared with an awning. Restroom was clean and camp host was very pleasant.

No phone, no lights, no internet, no kids acting like fools (at least on this past trip) just nature and quiet, plus the camp host was nice too. Thank you

Mark was a great host - he walked his rounds so that he could get to know the campers. My conversation with other campers confirmed my opinion. Great trail along a branch of the Purgatoire river just outside the campground.

Just beautiful as always. The flies were awful. The campground was clean and the host was right beside us. Lock up your trash and food. There are bears.

The vault toilets were completely full and really gross. There are no pictures of the sites on the website, so we had to reserve them 'blind'. The three sites we reserved looked close to each other on the map but in reality, were quite separated by trees and terraine. We weren't able to gather as a family like we thought we could. Our camper barely fit in the space and took some creative placement (and a lot of work) to make it fit. There was no dumpster and we had to pack out all of our trash. The small trash cans provided were not adequate. On the bright side, the campground was clean, the cute little towns nearby had gas and supplies, and the lake provided lots of water fun for our family. The access road is described on recreation.gov as not passable by RVs/Campers but we found the road in very good condition and not a problem at all. With better attention to the toilets, trash and online pics, I would be able to give the campground a higher rating.

The campground was clean and quiet. It is easily accessed from the highway. The vault toilets were clean and the drinking water was centrally located in the camp. The area was beautiful and well-maintained. I will definitely stay here again!

Camp host, Mark, was super nice.

Many fellow tent campers. Sites are widely spaced apart. Not really any tent pads but the parking areas can be used. We were there over Memorial day weekend and the nearby trails were wet or covered in snow. The birds were out though. Happy to have hummingbirds at our site! Lots of small trees available for hammock-ing. Overall, this area is remote. And thats a good thing!

Great tent camping, listened to the creek at night and enjoyed all the trees and shade around us. There is hiking right from the grounds and most sites are well spaced apart from each other.

Our host was very accommodating. The campsites and bathroom were clean. I have camped here before and will definitely be back.

Beautiful for those of us that like rustic/natural campsites. Unfortunately I picked the monsoon season to be there, although very green also very muddy.

Beautiful spot. Uncrowned.

Nice, shady with lots of hikes in the surrounding area. I only wish it was a bit quieter as some of the nearby sites let their kids scream and slam trailer doors way after the sun went down.

With the other nearby campgrounds closed for the season I can understand this area being full but control the kids who scream at each other like banshees

Really nice campground at the end of a 4-mile unpaved road. The road can be a bit rough in spots, but we did not have any problems pulling our 29' fifth wheel up it. There are three distinct loops at the campground. Four sites right on the river are really nice but limited to tents and very small RVs. The center loop has numerous campgrounds with meadow and forest spots. Say's it's an equestrian loop, but we've not seen any horses in our three trips to the campground. The upper loop is where we stayed. Great views of the meadow below. Lots of wildlife in the area - deer, bears, birds. The river is small at this elevation, but full of wild brook trout that readily take dry flies. Several sites are reservable and are the best bet if you are pulling a travel trailer or driving a motor home. Be sure you know the dimensions of the site. We've seen folks on more than one occasion struggle to get their rig to fit the site they had. All in all, one of our favorite campgrounds in southern Colorado. An easy drive into Cuchara or La Veta for a meal too.

This is a pretty remote and very quiet campground. Had a spot right on the river side. The valley trail is a beautiful hike through woods along the river and up to the headwaters. Even the blowdown areas from the recent storm are extremely interesting and the regrowth is something you don’t usually get to experience up close. (Handy to pick up a perfect walking stick everywhere as well). Clean toilets.

Great campsite. Remote enough to be away from it all, but not too far from civilization. Site #02 couldn't have been more perfect, with steady sounds of the river, great relative privacy, and nice views. We had our 19ft travel trailer and it fit with aplomb. I will hit this campsite again, you can be sure.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
