Its just a great location. Also the Rangers are very helpful. I was there early in the season. Not many bugs. I will say beware of the raccoons after dark, just like you need to everywhere you camp. There are boxes for your food. Use them.

Camp Gateway is one of the most beautiful and well-kept places that I know! The Rangers are very welcoming and clear about what to watch out for. They also do a great job informing you about events taking place on the grounds.

I love the proximity to the bay and ocean in a clean camp ground private from crowds and nice maintained rest rooms. Which it was opened through October though

Bugs are gone, everything was perfect as usual except for the extraordinary amount of campers that do not show up. One of my two nights the place was reserved as full but practically empty during absolutely glorious weather. Maybe let another family have your last minute reservation, even if you cant get a refund ? The feds should sanction them its really a problem.

Clean sites, clean bathrooms, great location. A bit tough that you have to drive out to the gate and re-enter to park the following morning -- you lose your campsite spot by 10am.

No shower, very inconvenient after getting into water. Dirty beach nearby

Our troop camp at Camp Gateway and hiked the multi use path twice, for a total of 20 miles. We really appreciated the water refill stations placed along the path. We will definitely be returning.

Start of the 2024 season and happy to report many of the same Rangers have returned. Fortunately, none of the Bugs that plagued the end of 2023 have returned! All the facilities are working fine, the grass has been cut just enough to make pitching a tent easy but keeping the wild look of the site. From what I experienced in my three days, I am looking forward to a great 2024 season.

The host greeted me when I arrived to tell me that there was a German (wood) Roach infestation. I didn't see any at night, but when I woke up the next morning I saw them on the picnic table and getting into my gear. I shook everything out but I still had some hitchhikers. When I got home I unpacked outside so I could kill them before I brought anything into the house. The bathrooms were closed; there were port-o-sans and foot-pump sinks. There was water from a spigot on the building. There are outdoor showers and indoor restrooms at North Beach, about 2 miles away. That said the campground is not far from the lighthouse, old fort buildings and a convenience store.

Ordinarily, I would boast about this campsite (which is usually a great little campsite in the perfect location). Its my second time camping here. If you can, go to Sandy Hook and support the park! There is so much history and beauty there. However, do not camp here until they get the cockroach infestation in order. I am not easily phased by bugs, but the campground is overrun with wood roaches. Every surface was covered with hundreds, if not thousands of them. Could not use the picnic table or really any surface. All of our equipment was immediately full of them when the sun went down and our only refuge was near the fire (although we were constantly shining flashlights on ourselves and flicking them off of our bodies all night). Luckily, we slept well because we managed to keep them out of our tent but neighbors werent so lucky. Fast forward and its our check out time. Took us two hours to shake our stuff out at the site and all day to shake, wash/scrub, and quadruple check all our stuff back home. I left some of my stuff outside for a whole week and threw a few things out to be safe but here I am.a week and a half later, finding a PA wood roach in my BED. I feel defeated and scared that there are more and honestly, I cant even imagine how much trouble that will benot to mention the expense. When/if this problem clears up, I would say definitely check it out, but I think its irresponsible to have the grounds open the way things are.

ALERT! ALERT! WOODROACHES EVERYWHERE! I'm shocked we're allowed to camp here, and It pains me to speak negatively about this great camping spot but the roach situation is OUT OF CONTROL. YOU WILL BRING ROACHES BACK TO YOUR HOME AND COMMUNITY. We spent 3 nights here and encountered 1000's of roaches. They will hide in the tents where the zipper flaps are and dozens will go into the the pole tubes, they will hide in everything you bring there. Before leaving myself and other guests spent hours shaking out every thing and article of clothing brought on to this land. When we arrived home we laid out a huge blue tarped and inspected everything again, we found about 50 then, it's 3 days later and I'm still killing them and finding egg nests. So after hours of cleaning in Sandy Hook and 4-5 more hours at home I've killed 73. 73! And we thought we did a good job of leaving them in Sandy Hook. I was told by a Ranger that they hijacked there way there from wood brought in from another state and they can't use pesticides because it's a National Park. To add insult to injury the showering and restroom facilities are not working but the porto- potties are, and boy do the roaches love them too. Don't go unless your community has these roaches already and you like to hang with roaches. On the second morning, I was leaving my tent hastily to run to the porto-pottie and was showered by about 25 roaches on my head and body as I unzipped the tent and they fell from under the flaps.

Theres a serious infestation of wood cockroaches and German cockroaches at Gateway this season. It is almost impossible to keep them out of your gear. Even after a careful, 4-hour breakdown trying to avoid bringing them home, we still ended up throwing away two camp chairs that we could not get clear of bugs. On top of all that, the batgrooms were out of commission and porta-potties-also infested-were the only option. We abandoned our campsite and left early. Shame on Gateway for not warning campers before arrival!

I have always loved this place, but on my recent trip, I couldn't believe the amount of bugs ..Really roaches, that we were encountering. In my about 7 years of camping here I have never experienced this. At first my wife and I were like , well maybe its because there were a few days of rain, but no, it only got worse to the point of us leaving 2 days earlier than we were suppose to, and even canceling another weekend we had scheduled, that I had reserved back in February . Its a shame, because this place has always been a great experience for us. Like other reviews which I've read, we also spent a good amount of time cleaning out our equipment, but not before we went to a local supermarket and picked up some bug killer, spray and a home sized broom. All which helped to the best of our ability clean out our stuff, because these bugs were everywhere. I have seen recently that the park has acknowledged that there is a problem and closed the campground down, which will no doubt prevent anyone else this headache . I hope that Sandy Hook, along with the state of NJ will be able to alleviate this problem, but my senses tell me that it wont be easy and one of my favorite campgrounds may be shut down for quite a while. So sad.

A beautiful view at sunset time, the people at the office really nice. Everything very organized. We were not so lucky about the flushing bathrooms because they were repairing them but anyway they solved it with cabin toilets. We are definitely going back.

We had the best time and cant wait to return next summer. That being said We stayed in A4 (right next to the water station) and our campsite was unfortunately infested with wood roaches. I dont take using that term lightly. There were thousands of roaches just within our site (no exaggeration). During the week we stayed the roaches seemed to multiply exponentially. We werent able to cook as much as we planned because they were in our raccoon box, in all of our food and supplies, and seemed to also be inside the picnic table. They crawled into tight folds in our camp chairs and under the attached tarp at the bottom of our tent. When we went to leave to go home there were hundreds of roaches crawling around inside the tarp. We ended up having to throw away the majority of our gear to avoid the risk of bringing the roaches home. We worried we were overreacting by doing this but then when we took our bikes off the car there were about 30 or so roaches hiding under our bike seats, fenders and inside the bells. We were able to spray our bikes down with Raid and took care of that problem but just wanted to put a note here that they will hitch a ride and hang on outside during a lengthy car ride. Again - we had an incredible time despite this and cant wait to return but will plan for this issue in the future and wanted to give others a heads up.

I just used PerfectCamp.com to book six consecutive August nights at the most popular campsite in one of the most popular campgrounds in Humboldt Redwoods State Park in California. That is not anything I could have accomplished anywhere else with the ease I did here! Thank you, PerfectCamp! I LOVE this site! You will find me on several other camping sites but the design, format, functionality, and personality of this the best. It’s fresh and clean.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
