No shower, very inconvenient after getting into water. Dirty beach nearby

Ordinarily, I would boast about this campsite (which is usually a great little campsite in the perfect location). Its my second time camping here. If you can, go to Sandy Hook and support the park! There is so much history and beauty there. However, do not camp here until they get the cockroach infestation in order. I am not easily phased by bugs, but the campground is overrun with wood roaches. Every surface was covered with hundreds, if not thousands of them. Could not use the picnic table or really any surface. All of our equipment was immediately full of them when the sun went down and our only refuge was near the fire (although we were constantly shining flashlights on ourselves and flicking them off of our bodies all night). Luckily, we slept well because we managed to keep them out of our tent but neighbors werent so lucky. Fast forward and its our check out time. Took us two hours to shake our stuff out at the site and all day to shake, wash/scrub, and quadruple check all our stuff back home. I left some of my stuff outside for a whole week and threw a few things out to be safe but here I am.a week and a half later, finding a PA wood roach in my BED. I feel defeated and scared that there are more and honestly, I cant even imagine how much trouble that will benot to mention the expense. When/if this problem clears up, I would say definitely check it out, but I think its irresponsible to have the grounds open the way things are.

My son and I had an excellent experience. Everyone there was nice, rangers and campers. The raccoons truly have no fear of humans and even being being extremely aware of where we were eating and not dropping food, they were still in abundance at night.

The bathrooms were very clean, it would be awesome if they installed some type of shower (even outdoor one!), instead of relying on the ones by the beach.

The sunsets are amazing. If you can, bring bikes as sandy hook is extremely bike friendly.

The campsites are pretty good and well situated. Each site should have its own stand-alone pavilion. Even outdoor showers will go a long way toward making it a better camping experience. There are way too many raccoons moving around where humans eat and prepare food, including on top of the picnic tables, which is a dangerous situation begging for your campers to ingest a roundworm or other parasite that raccoons carry around on their feet. I spoke about this to a young man wearing a park police unform, gun, and badge who was walking around the campsites. His response to my concern about the overpopulated raccoons was outrageous: He actually said there are too many humans and that killing the raccoons would not be "humane." I don't know where you hire your staff from, but that guy should be fired and replaced with an intelligent person who cares about the park visitors. Sandy Hook is becoming a biological danger zone from these artificially overabundant pests that spread disease. Some of your staff are not willing to take the necessary steps to fix the situation, and in fact they are blaming the human visitors for being there as the problem. Unreal. My tax dollars are NOT fully at work here. I expect the National Park Service to operate far more professionally than this.

Lots of historic places around. Have to bring your own fire wood. It's very peaceful.

Too many trash in the campground. Camp spots are too closed together.

Enjoyed exploring Sandy Hook and the beaches. Had a great breakfast at Alice’s just south of Sandy Hook. Great food and service. Plan to take Ferry to New York on next visit.
