Cabin is roomy, great views, wonderful supply of firewood. We did not experience an electrical outage during our stay however would bring a lean to or some sort of cover for the picnic table outdoors in case we needed to set up the Coleman stove to cook in the rain. It was too warm to start an indoor fire. No porches with overhangs here. Bedroom with bunk beds doesn't have ability to open a window, gets stuffy in there. No signs of bears, but plenty of cattle in the area due to downed fences secondary to a rebuild. Also due to the fence rebuild, there are loads of nails around the cabin. Check drives around cabin and the turnaround by the out buildings for nails. We picked up a long nail in left rear causing a flat. I highly recommend Fleet Services in Norwood on Skalla Road 970-327-4424. Nice people and they got us on the road safely in no time at all. Avoid Telluride and pick up your lunch sandwiches at M&M Mercantile in Placerville. Ice cream also available.

It may not be fair to give any rating at all for this cabin as we never even made it to or saw the cabin. This is more of a warning to not trust the driving directions on the rec.gov website page for Lone Cone Cabin. Call and talk to them in person. We printed out and followed the directions to the t in late May. Turns out that the directions were for the longer higher altitude scenic route that should and can only be taken after complete snow melt (summer). This is a very secluded, remote (and beautiful) area! No cell service. We got stuck in a snow drift at about 10,000 ft and spent the night in our vehicle. Hiked out five miles in the morning to cell service and called 911 for rescue.
The forests service was kind enough to refund our reservation costs after we informed them of what happened.
We still intend to stay in this cabin later in the year!! I'll update this review after we stay there!

Great, peaceful visit. We will return again soon for some mountain tranquillity. Cabin was very well tended to, and in good condition considering its age.

Great location..
Great nostalgic interaction with Forest Service History..
Well preserved Historic Cabin, with good info on history provided..
Good communication from Rec.gov and later communication with the folks at Norwood.. Ranger District
Gorgeous hiking along the adjacent Ditch..

Relatively Clean, though the realization that YOU are the cleaning crew after your stay, didn't show up until after we were there..
Toilet broke on the second day, but we made do by manually reaching in the tank.. Seemed to have not been checked in awhile..
Big pile of food from previous guests left outside in the front yard of the cabin, which attracted quite a bit of wildlife which is really bad for them..
Enough food left unprotected on shelves and apparent previous cleaning issues that resulted in a fairly significant Mouse infestation..
Realizing this is a historic cabin, we expect a minimal amount of mice and other beasties, but the problem was significant enough that we left at
5 am on our last morning due to the pronounced mouse infestation and concern with disease..

The Forest Service assured us, after the fact, that they would address the Mouse issue, so hopefully this has been taken care of..

Lone Cone Cabin was a little hard to get to, but worth it! Follow the roads from Norwood, which are in better shape than the ones further east.

The cabin was clean and plenty of room (there were just two of us). Take drinking water. We were pleased to find it has a shower with good water pressure.

The views were fantastic.

I just used PerfectCamp.com to book six consecutive August nights at the most popular campsite in one of the most popular campgrounds in Humboldt Redwoods State Park in California. That is not anything I could have accomplished anywhere else with the ease I did here! Thank you, PerfectCamp! I LOVE this site! You will find me on several other camping sites but the design, format, functionality, and personality of this the best. It’s fresh and clean.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
