Fabulous cabin, excellent Nordic skiing right out the front door with daily grooming. A real prize

Incredible location and always shocked at how affordable it is. The Forest Service maintains these properties very well. Only issue was we ran low on a few supplies but the contacts for the property were responsive and accommodating. It does stink that the stove still isn't working but maybe next year.

We had a group of 10, 3 families & the space was perfect. Nice area for meals & games and then upstairs a nice sitting or play space for the kids. Sledding snow-shoeing right out the door. Place was also clean! Nice big kitchen too.

We rented this cabin through recreation.gov for thanksgiving night (thurs) through Sunday. 12 of us from 3 different states, drove 6 hours to get to the cabin and when we arrived realized our reservation confirmation did not include the entry code for the door to gain access. We spent the next almost 2 hours trying to gain access and call someone for help, the emergency contact John had his phone off and even after multiple text, calls and voicemails never followed up. The local sheriff had no idea how to help, CO State Patrol did their best but could not help either and recreation.gov was closed. We eventually gained access through an open door and found some keys.The cabin is beautiful and more than equipped for a large group of different age groups.We stayed the whole weekend and never once heard back from anyone after our almost catastrophic holiday.Be aware and prepared.I would definitely recommend staying here, just be sure you dont do it on a holiday and make sure you have the entry code prior to leaving!

We absolutely love our visit to the Matterhorn cabin in the winter. It's location is amazing, with beautiful views and cross country ski tracks right outside the door. Skiing at Telluride Mountain Village is just about 7 miles away. The cabin has everything one needs for a comfortable stay and a great getaway from it all.

Matterhorn cabin is a perfect cabin for a group. It easily accomodates 10 people comfortably. It is not luxurious but has everything we need. The cross country ski trails right out the door are always groomed and very quiet. There are several other xc areas nearby. The Telluride ski area and town is a short 10-15 min drive. The views from the cabin are spectacular!

This is the third time we have stayed at the Matterhorn. You simply cannot beat this place for price, location, and the essentials. It is not a 5 star VRBO, but it has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Even the beds are comfortable! Our group of 12 stayed for three nights in late January. The location lends itself to numerous options for day outings. We had one group backcountry ski up Lizard Head, one group stick around the cabin and do numerous laps on the Nordic track, and another group pay to ski at Telluride Ski Resort. At the end of the day, we all came back together and shared group meals. The Nordic track gets very high marks from the skate ski folks. Not crowded, very well maintained, a lots of options for long or short laps. The bonus with the Matterhorn is that it forces you to unplug. Cell service was best with AT&T, however, it was intermittent. No WIFI thank goodness. There is a decent TV and lots of DVD's if that is your thing. The Matterhorn is a great place to hang with friends, share group meals, and unplug. The comfy beds, hot showers, flushing toilets, HEAT, and well stocked double kitchen gives you everything you need. Park Ranger John stopped in to check on us and couldn't be more pleasant. Thanks so much, we will be back sometime soon.

Great location. The frying pans and knifes leave a bit to be desired but it works.

Rangers Office was very nice and helpful. The installations were in very good condition as explained. We had visited other state cabins and this cabin exceeded our expectations.

This cabin has everything you need for 10 people. The fold out couches were a bit dirty. Everything else was great and the night skiing was fun.

Super clean, well appointed cabin for a group. Cross Country Skiing right out the door. Great views and lovely experience. Only drawback was there was no wood for the woodstove. The Cabin has good propane heat so that was not a problem.

The Matterhorn Cabin is in a beautiful location with miles of nordic ski trails just out the door. We had six adults in our group and had plenty of room. Even though it was very cold at night, the cabin stayed warm with just the heater on. We would definitely stay here again. The grooming of the Priest Lake trails is excellent.

Great cabin, very good for a larger group or a family reunion. We spent the Christmas vacation at the cabin, three families for a total of 10 people, it was very comfortable and pleasant. The location is wonderful also.

We have rented Matterhorn once or twice during the winter for the last 4 or 5 years. It's great to be right at the ski area and though the cabin is nothing fancy, it works for what we want. There were new mattresses this year and that's a big improvement.
Hopefully, they will continue to make some improvements, because it needs it! The chairs around the dining room table are stained, dirty and falling apart. There is a leak under at least one of the kitchen sinks that had a large pan under it and an inch or two of standing, dirty water.
Last year there was a floor lamp in the main room which was nice so you didn't have to have all of the florescent ceiling lights on, but it was gone this year.
The people who stayed before us had done an adequate job of cleaning the surface of the kitchen and bathroom, but there were places in the kitchen that are really dirty like the ovens. We also took a couple of dishes or bowls out of the kitchen cupboard that were dirty. Supplies for cleaning are questionable, like sponges that have been who knows where; nothing separated for kitchen and bathroom and no rags. It's really varied over the years about what is supplied. This year there were no trash bags (the kitchen trash cans were gross) and the few kitchen towels that we found were in a pile on top of the fridge so not sure if they were clean.
Bottom line, we would go again, but plan to take some of our own cleaning supplies and spend a little while cleaning before we unpack. We will take not only bed and bath linens (including a bath mat) but some for the kitchen, rags, etc.
Hope the cabin continues to have improvements!

Super great place for a family. We had so much fun on the trails and building snow forts and sliding on the nearby hill. Took the gondola into town for an afternoon.

This cabin is a great place to stay for a winter get-away! We liked the 2 dormitory style bathrooms and the 5 bedrooms with comfortable beds. The double kitchen was great for our group cooking, with plenty of room for food and beverages in the 2 refrigerators. Skiing right out the door of the cabin was fantastic! The groomed trails for Nordic skiing are wonderful!
The only complaint is that the cabin was not clean! We washed each dish, glass, cup and piece of silverware before using them because most items were coated with grease and/or dust. The kitchen drawers were very dirty inside, and the cabinets beneath the kitchen sinks were very dirty as well. Guests are required to clean before checking out, but apparently the last guests forgot to clean the toilets and vacuum the floors before leaving. This cabin could use a deep cleaning!

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
