We had a dickens of a time booking our reservation, though we were online with fingers poised to go at 10AM EST 5 months before we wanted to book a reservation. At Recreation.gov, the entire block of sites was not operational, so there was no way to make any reservation at Wawona. Because we wanted some sort of campsite at Yosemite for our dates, we opted to book in the Valley campsites. By the time we realized that Wawona was not magically going to become available for reservations, though, there were only individual dates still available in the Valley. We almost unhappily booked 3 separate spots for our intended timeframe, paying all the fees, etc, but not convinced that was really what we wanted. The next day, the Wawona campground had opened up, and we were able to book a single site for 5 days close to where we wanted to be staying. We right away cancelled our Valley reservations, and got a partial refund. But I am miffed that our intention to make reservations at Wawona was thwarted by a NPS (or recreation.gov) snafu. We had no way on the weekend 'Reservation Day' (during the few seconds scramble in which to make a reservation) to contact NPS to find out what was wrong with their reservation system, and when would it open for Wawona. Second choice of camping ANYWHERE in Yosemite would have been just OK, but when the reservation system DID become up and running, there was no way to avoid excessive cancellation fees for an issue that was not even our fault. This was under the control of NPS, and they should have either had their system up and running with recreation.gov, or they should have been prepared to pay the cancellation fees related to shortfalls within their own system.

Great campsite with shade. Sites are more spread out than the valley and this one is up against the river. Not super easy to access the river immediately behind but if you walk down a bit you can dip your feet in. Management was great and came by to check us in since we got in late the night before. Was a bit buggy when we were here mid May.

Wawona is our favorite campground in Yosemite National Park. It's a quick 40min drive to the valley but the campground is way more enjoyable. The only tension, and this is from 20 years of camping in the area is Thursday & Friday nights the campground quite hours are not respected and there is not camp host on site to help enforce them. If you travel with kids just be advised you may encounter weekend campground parties that go till 2-3am regardless of how many times you request them to follow quiet hours

Farther from most of what we ended up exploring, showers would be nice

Great little spot right on the river. No AT&T coverage, but nice excuse to unplug for a bit.
