It is what it is. On the one hand you have to be grateful for an option to sleep in a convenient location thats in high demand, but the trade-off is youre packed into slots in a treed parking lot where you hope the people 20 away are respectful. We are the campers that come in late and leave early, and just use it for a place to park the van, and stow the food. We dont hang out therewhich can pose a problem for check-in because if youre there multiple nights and dont catch the kiosk when its open (only 10-4 in the winter) they will give your prepaid campsite away. We learned this the hard way. Even the campground office which has longer hours wont help you. Its an antiquated system set up for managing the campground while saving money, but its a pain for those of us who have full days planned, breaking up our days to drive back to the campsite in that 6-hour window just to prove ID. More unnecessary traffic in the Valley. Hopefully a system can be devised and implemented for checking in to streamline the process for everyone. As it is, if you get there after 4, the rangers have dutifully written out a list of the 100 or so names and campsites of those who havent arrived before 4, and put it on a white board at the kiosk. Then when you arrive after hours you sign in on a clipboard with your reservation numbertho youre still not officially checked in, and they can still sell your campsite out from under you if you dont catch the kiosk when its open the next morning. How about a tiny scanner, like they have at the blood draw labs, that scans your license and takes your infothen youre done. Hard wired to a storage drive in the kiosk? Or some simple idea like that. Certainly the park people who work with an understanding of the process can come up with something thats a lot easier for everyone.

Wonderfully run campsite. Instructions were clear, facilities functional and in good order. The trail from the southern part of Upper Pines to the Happy Isles trailhead does not seem to match the location on most maps. Youll have to go to the second-last loop to find it.

The scenery is always worth the trip, whether you come from San Francisco or from the other side of the world. Bring your bicycle as it is the best way to get around the park's 10+ miles of paved paths and you'll see much more than any other method of transportation.
The Check in hours are a challenge if you arrive after 4PM or if you hike the trails before 10 AM, the CG kiosks are open for only 6 hours mid-day.
Be prepared with bikes, dressed in layers, and good hiking shoes with an adventurous spirit. You'll finish the trip in better shape than when you arrived, both physically and mentally.
