Beautiful location but just too crowded, too close to each other. It was like a tent city with too many loud people, too much smoke from camp fires which I hope will be banned. Its certainly not the ideal nature getaway. I think i would enjoy more in the winter when the crowd is not there.

It's Yosemite Valley or it would get -2 stars. The dilapidated campgrounds in the Valley are a national disgrace. Site 203 is a bad site, I already knew that, but at least I got the reservation, so I won't complain too much about that per se. It is what it is. In general, the urinal overflowed and made a mess on the floor. Rather than fix it, it was bagged. The toilets had damaged wax rings and leaked. Kudos for the janitor-dude. He cleaned up the mess daily and the bathroom was decent for an hour or two. The motion detector in the bathroom didn't work and the high power lamps in there are suitable for intricate electronic assembly work. They eventually got turned off, so at some point during the night it seemed like camping in the woods and not in the middle of a city. The fire pit design is ridiculous, as only half of it is usable. Whoever installed the fire pits apparently didn't know that the nocturnal air drainage is downslope. The usable half faces downslope so the downslope users sit in the smoke all night. Radiant heat from the other half is blocked by large slotted panels that hold a fire grate for cooking that no one I've ever seen uses. Site 203 has these fire rings. A newer fire ring has 360 access, but it is double walled, which prevents any heat from radiating from the ring itself. The new rings are also higher and that makes sitting around the campfire even less enjoyable than sitting in the smoke. I suppose that one could stand around it all night, but for us older folks, that's not a great option either. We've been going to the Valley for 50 years and I have to say, the old rock rings were 10 times better. The Valley is as wonderful and dreamy as it was 150 years ago, but the campgrounds, or what's left of them at least, which isn't much, are a nightmare and are among the worst ones I've ever stayed in.

Other than having all my firewood stolen along with solar lights, Upper Pines site was good. It is Yosemite, after all.
