The staff were excellent. Cheerful, helpful and friendly. Bathrooms were convenient and clean. The campground itself is not pleasant, overcrowded and uncomfortable. The first "campsite" we got was not a campsite under any definition. It was a tiny patch of gravel at a 25 degree slope with nowhere to pitch a tent. If we had been there in summer we would have been in big trouble. Fortunately there was a single alternative available which the staff helped us switch our reservation to. This one was not much better but at least there was a small patch of ground to pitch our two person Tent. The campsites are jammed in like sardines and we heard many people complaining about both the density and the poor quality of the sites with bad drainage. After an expensive and long renovation this is very disappointing. Fortunately we only stayed one night before heading out to the backcountry so it was tolerable. Again, every staff person we encountered was wonderful and helpful and they deserve 5 stars, it is just the campsites that are poor.

Beautiful CG location - two late check ins - spotty cell coverage (drive 20mins W on the 120 to Olmstead Point). Was a little confused on the "backpacker CG" versus regular, but that's only b/c we were new to the area AND the wildnerness permit (so that's on us). Once we dialed that in things were super simple. What we LOVED was that each camp spot, regular CG an BP CG, has a bear locker AND a fire ringer. I'd also recommend taking a 5 min walk to the Merced River in the morning. Utterly epic. Divine. I wanna go back already.

We were there at the tail end of the August monsoon storms just as people were cleaning up and drying out. The rangers and campers seemed to be really happy to be there after the long closure. We hiked to May Lake and to Cathedral Lake in between the storms.
