Large herd of Elks below campground. Bull #24 was in rare form. Love this campground in late fall.

The campground and park were super crowded even though it was mid-September. Most of the urinals and about 1/3 of the toilets in the campground were not working. Water spigots were communal and far apart. Some were inside occupied campsites, so I did not feel comfortable using them. There was no RV electricity, running water or sewers. No showers either. Cell service was one bar and only enough to receive texts. Internet service was nonexistent for campers. But National Park Service personal had top-notch internet and VoIP service. Crude and antiquated services were reserved for visitors. Mammoth Campground is far away from most of the sights, too. It is inconveniently located. Most of the sights were jammed full. Parking often overflowed onto the road and created a hazardous situation for drivers and pedestrians. Traffic was heavy and jams were frequent. Many drivers were subsequently in a rush and drove too fast on open stretches of the antiquated two lane highways. Unsafe passing and refusing to stop for pedestrians was common. My average vehicle speed was 15 miles per hour (24.14 kilometers per hour). Gas and almost everything else was grossly overpriced. Gardner was only slightly better. $6.69 for a gallon of milk that cost $2.49 at Walmart. I tried hiking in the backcountry. The trails were well-worn and crowded when they were even open. Many are still closed after the flooding 3 years ago. Overall, not a pleasant experience.

Site 17 was a fairly large, flat site. Excellent, helpful campground hosts! Clean bathrooms, potable water available to fill your trailer if needed. Enjoyed our stay herevery quiet. Its a 5 minute drive to the hot spring terraces, and about 45 minutes to Lamar Valley.

Easy campground to negotiate. Almost all pull through campsites.

The hosts are fantastic. The sites are big enough and not too close to each other. We needed the sun for our solar panel so I don't complain but I noticed that it's not a lot shaded. You can walk to the main Mammoth area (visitor center, stores, restaurants). But the campground is in the middle of a very busy road switchback and it's noisy.

Fantastic host/volunteers. Bathrooms and facilities were well kept and very clean.

Please go back to first come first serve basis rather than advance reservations. We saw that a lot of sites were no-shows (or cut their reservations short) during our stay.

If absolutely necessary, reservations should be made by campsite type, rather than specific sites. This, coming from someone with a background in reservations. We spent a lot of time checking in and checking out of three (yes, three) different sites during our short six night stay when we could've been out and about exploring.

The reservations, both here and in Grand Teton, put enormous time constraints on our trip. In the past, we've had the opportunity to travel more organically, with an open and flexible schedule. This is especially important when it comes to things like avoiding crowds and inclement weather.
