This is a nice campground that stays pretty full these days. Toilets were kept clean, and the campground is in good repair, and people are mostly following the rules. We had a site in the center for the first time rather than along the river, which isn't as nice, but was still enjoyable.

If you pick a spot next to the river, you'll be extremely pleased with this campground. Other sites away from the river especially in the loop, are a bit overcrowded.

The campground location is the area between the road to the town of Marble and the Crystal River. The facilities are well maintained and clean and the campground hosts were friendly. The sites near the river are shaded, cooler, and enjoy the sound of the river which is very close by. We had a site that was closer to the road and in full sun on a hot August day. The road noise, while not terribly loud, was a constant presence that certainly drowned out the sound of the river. The campground was "full" but when the website showed that there was a last minute cancellation we grabbed it and felt lucky to get a site. The sad and discouraging thing is that many campsites , perhaps 25%, were empty. They had been reserved but nobody ever came to use the site. Some of the sites reserved by no-shows were for ten days or more. It probably goes without saying that the best sites, the shady ones on the river, were the ones most often empty.I believe that any campers who reserved a campsite and don't show up nor contact the reservation agency should lose their site and their deposit after one day's absence. The site should then revert to first come first served status. The current system is a travesty.

We only spent one night, but the scenery was magnificent. Hosts were friendly and helpful. We even ran into them in Marble later that week and they remembered us. Love the cool nights and the beautiful Crystal River.

There's a lot to do and see in the area: Avalanche Ranch for soaking in the hot springs; Redstone Lodge for a great meal; Marble for seeing the marble sculptures and hiking to the falls there; hiking, swimming in the beautiful Crystal River.
