When we arrived at 11 pm on Friday, it was -22 degrees outside (not windchill). Inside the cabin it was 20 degrees and unfortunately the wood burning stove is dramatically undersized for the cabin. It took us 2 hours and a lot of wood to get the inside up to 40 degrees in the main room. Forget sleeping on the bunks in the winter because they are so far from the stove.
I would highly recommend a 0-20 degree sleeping bag and plenty of layers if it's supposed to be cold.
It's a very quaint cabin and a really fun, rustic stay. However, I think the Forest Service should raise the rates to fund a newer, more efficient stove to heat the room in the winter. A lot of the heat seems lost up the flue and the inside just never seems to heat up.
