My grandparents started bringing me to Sugarloaf II before I turned one and I have been camping here exclusively ever since (57 years) Is home away from home and have many memories here. For the most part it has retained much of its charm, and we do love it. But, unfortunately things change. We arrived Friday eve and Sat @ 8am, we woke to loud construction trucks w/trailer coming up Zealand Rd. & into the campground. Turns out they were dropping off a small front end loader between sites 1 & 2. They left after about 45 mins. Fast fwd to Monday morning, 8am again! We hear trucks come in and they start pulling up the fire pits in all empty sites. I can not for life of me understand why this is being done DURING the season? While many campers like us, are staying there for their vacation to get away from noises like that and seeking the quietness of the mountains!?! DO BEFORE OR AFTER SEASON! For two days this was going on and each firepit they pulled up, they would drop off with a slam onto the ground in an area along side the campground road. If this wasn't bad enough, the nice open firepits that existed in majority of the sites for many decades were being replaced with 2.5'-3' tall, round closed firepits. So you will no longer be able to see the fire from your camp chair, you'd have to stand or sit right on top of it...boooooo! Not sure if this is the new U.S. Forestry regulation, but it is just awful. Totally bummed me out to see that. Needless to say that we soaked in every fire for the rest of the trip, knowing that on the Sept trip we have booked, will be with the lame tall barrel like firepit. Lastly, for the first time since in my life going here, both dumpsters were full to the brim by Sunday night. I had to walk my trash over to the other dumpster, since when I opened the side door, trash was falling out at my feet (in the dark!). I did notice that new management took over, not sure if related. Still my go to place, but HATE HATE HATE those new pits. :/

My grandparents started bringing me to Sugarloaf II before I was a year old and have been camping here exclusively ever since (57 years). Normally, I'd give this place a 15 star review, because to me it is sacred ground. For the most part it has retained much of its charm, but unfortunately things change, like fire pits. While many campers like us, are staying there for our vacation, you know to get away from noises like that and relax in the quietness of the mountains!?! Good grief, DO IT BEFORE OR AFTER THE SEASON! For two days this was going on and each firepit they pulled up, they would drop off with a 'CLANG' onto the ground in an area along side the campground road. If this wasn't bad enough, the nice open firepits that have existed in majority of the sites for many decades were being replaced with 2.5'-3' tall, round closed firepits. I had to walk my trash to two dumpsters, because when I opened the door on 1st, trash was falling out at my feet (in the dark!) and the 2nd dumpster was just about as bad. I did notice new management took over, not sure if related. Still love the place, but disappointed.

With the new campground hosts the campground is back to being one of the best places to camp in the White Mountain NF.The road leading to the campground is still an issue as in previous years. Too many of those traveling up the notch road speed.Speed bumps near the entrances of Sugarloaf 1 and 2 even seasonal ones would help in any mishaps involving campers and speeding traffic.

Great campgroundclean and well-maintained. However, I faced difficulties contacting the campground hosts. After vehicle issues delayed my check-out, I tried reaching the hosts but found no direct contact information online. Neither Recreation.gov nor the White Mountain HQ could provide it. Eventually, the White Mountain HQ contacted the management contractor, who then reached the hosts, but this was a lengthy process. Providing the host's contact information after booking would prevent such issues and streamline communication.

Very little light pollution and comfortable but small campsites. The biggest negative was the vaulted toilet restrooms. The campsite also wasn't as private as I hoped.
