I recommend the Roost Trail, it's a great little jaunt up to a nice view, very close to the campground. The nearby small footbridge over the Wild River leads to a sweet little sandy spot for wading and swimming in the river off to the right.
Coming up from the south via Rt 113 there is a very kind couple, Jim and Becky, who sell firewood, local maps, hand-picked wild blueberries, their own maple syrup and eggs from their hens. Jim works as a docent at the Brickett Place Historic Site and he had some great suggestions for hyper-local hikes. Look for the Open flag on the left side of road when headed north from North Chatham on the New Hampshire side.
The Timberland Campground just west of Gilead is also a great resource for ice, firewood, snacks, and a bit of cell phone service.
After a long hike, I recommend going into Gorham, NH and sitting down at Mr. Pizza for a hearty meal. Nothing fancy, but a clean place with good food.
I like to go to the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and talk to one of the rangers there; get the weather forecast and a hike suggestion.
