- The last couple days of our trip this year were pretty heavily clouded in smoke from forest fires in the region. But, that isn't the fault of the NPS or its staff. Smoke on the last day was particularly bad. I have a boat and literally had to depend on the GPS/Chartplotter to navigate back to the campground.
- Fishing is pretty decent if you can get out on the lake. Go up the canyon towards Ross Dam. Gorgeous scenery and good fishing. I have seen some fish caught in Thunder Arm, near the boat launch. But, it's pretty slim-pickings. Water south of the Hwy 20 bridge is a lot shallower than it may look. There is a designated fish cleaning station near the boat launch. Just be ready for dirty looks from other campers who (mistakenly) think this is a dish-washing area. Also be prepared to clean the area before you clean your catch (due to the inconsiderate use by others).
- Parking in the boat trailer parking area is bad. Boat trailer parking spots get taken by cars that aren't boating. Also be aware that there are emissions rules for boat motors. Your motor has to meet emissions standards for 2006. This basically means that you either have a 4-stroke motor or a rather newer-generation of 2-stroke. Older (pre-2006) 2-stroke motors are banned on the lake. If you are running a motor boat, be aware that this lake is very heavily used by kayaks and paddle boarders. Some of these folks have little/no etiquette on the boat launch and very little/no knowledge of basic boating rules/courtesy.
