Very crowded campground…it didn’t look like the inner campsites had any privacy. Luckily, the outer spots did. The first night was fairly peaceful. However, the second night was a different story. A large group showed up, at least 30 people, occupying 6 or so sites….they proceeded to carry on until 2 AM. Laughing, crying, screaming, setting their car alarms off, you name it. I have never experienced anything like this before in my life, a complete disregard for the people around them. Their only saving grace was that they weren’t drinking alcohol. I’m glad it was my last night.

5 star for the North Cascades. It is very beautiful and it is much less crowded than Mt. Rainier. Unfortunately we did not have a great experience at Colonial Creek Campground. There is no check-in process and no rangers or camp hosts in the evening. We arrived at dinner time and another group had taken our site and refused to leave. We had to set up camp in a different spot then move it all the next day when they left. Not easy with all the gear you need traveling with 3 children. We are new to camping and it was very unclear to me that Colonial Creek has other policies- unlike other campsites we've been to about leaving items at your camp ground while you are out hiking. I didn't want some of our camp gear stolen by day use visitors to the trails (day use parking 2 spots from us). If you leave your spot without having personal items the Rangers will give away your spot. It doesn't matter if you have a paid reservation. And they will not try to contact you to confirm. And they will not give you a refund. The rangers told us this was their policy after we complained. I was unaware of this. But after our poor experience with the Campground, I re-read every communications and the NPS website and all policies and I did not see anything about giving away a campsite if you did not leave personal items behind. These problems could have been avoided if their communications were clearly written when booking the site and at check-in. If the campground had been staffed we could have also asked questions and sought assistance when we needed it with the people who took our spot.

We enjoyed our two night stay. Two nice hikes leave from the campground. Thunder Creek Trail was great. Thunder Knob- was OK. The bathroom and water were conveniently located. There is also a dish cleaning station- that we didn't see until we were leaving. It would have been nice to know about it. We hiked the Maple Pass Loop (a must do) and then soaked our tired feet in Lake Diablo.

Campsites are very large and quite private. Deer sightings wandering around are always fun. Camp staff and Rangers were very nice and friendly. The views around Lake Diablo are hard to beat! Can't wait to come back again soon!
