I loved how nice this campsite is. Restrooms are clean, have sinks and hand soap. Hand soap and toilet paper was always refilled in timely manner and was never out or empty.
Plenty of hikes on highway 20. You should do them. Diablo lake lookout is a classic stop.

The Colonial South Campgrounds are beautiful and clean. Our "hike to" spot was a short walk from our car and to the bathrooms. It was nice to be set back away from your car and more in nature. Staying in the park was a great experience. It was easy to get to hiking spots, via walking or driving, and you could walk to the lake as well. Highly recommend staying at this campground.

There's a lot to enjoy at Colonial Creek Campground - a variety of camp spots (some in the woods, some along the water...), lake access, nice and clean facilities, plenty of nearby hiking (including some wonderful walks at the campground), large bear lockers, and a thoughtful camp host who checked in with our group about bear safety after there had been a sighting in the area. While we didn't end up paddling the few miles from the boat launch to Diablo Lake (it was quite rainy and overcast while we were there), it sounds like it'd be a grand adventure with breathtaking views!

Our biggest issue wasn't with the campsite itself, but rather with the online reservation service. Be sure to carefully check your reservation if you're booking online, and call if you have any questions at all. When we'd initially booked (for our party of 2, plus 2 friends from out of town) months in advance, we found a campsite available Friday and Sunday, but listed as First Come First Serve and therefore unavailable to book on Saturday (which we figured was fine, as we could just stay in that same campsite and pay for the spot onsite Saturday). Just before our trip, we learned that the system had had a glitch, and that Saturday had opened up to reservations a few months after we'd booked Fri/Sun. The supervisor we called to ask for help/advice didn't offer us any problem-solving tips (there were actually a few open campsites we noticed when we arrived that hadn't shown up online, and other campgrounds nearby), but did chide us for not noticing sooner. And, although we told the hosts on site to please offer our Sunday spot to the Saturday crew (there's no service near the campground, so we couldn't cancel online) since we decided to leave early rather than setting up/taking down camp 3 days in a row, our request for a Sunday refund was denied. So, that unfortunate circumstance was frustrating and gave us less time to explore the otherwise lovely campground.
