Site 47 was unlevel. Marked as slight grade. If the posts would be removed you could get more level. The view was great. Nice to see camp hosts. They were helpful.

I loved this campground and camp site! A lovely walk to the river where we saw the feral horses each evening. And so many birds! We woke up early for a drive and saw 50+ bison on the road coming down for breakfast. I cant wait to come back and camp here again!

Cottonwood campground was very pleasant and quiet. We tent-camp and were away from the big trailers. Had 2 bison in the grasslands just behind the tent area. Camp hosts were very welcoming and informative and we really enjoyed talking with them about their volunteerism in the park campground. We hiked both the north and south units of Theodore Roosevelt National Park spending several days in each location. The north unit is more colorful due to the many diverse rock layers. We saw wildlife in both units, including the bison, too many prairie dogs to count, coyote, elk, the wild horses, pronghorns, mule deer, the black and white-tailed deer, with many of the sightings close (but from a still safe distance). We've been to nearly 40 of our National Parks and this had beautiful scenery (as does all our national parks), easy driving, hiking for all skill levels, great wildlife, and low population. A wonderful trip for our 34th wedding anniversary.

We were at site 47 in the cottonwood campground. Nice site backing up to the wilderness and river. No fire pits. Nice bathroom but no showers.

I stayed at site 47. Back in parking was challenging but it was a good site. I had decent Verizon coverage the bathrooms were clean. I never interacted or even saw any rangers. In the evening I saw wild horses across the River and in the morning a Bison was meandering through the campground.

We could walk to the river from our spot. The wild horses were hanging out by the river. Bathrooms were nice and new. Overall a good campground especially for the reasonable price.

We camped in space 47 the first weekend in May which backed up to the river. The wildlife was out everywhere. I thought maybe it was because it was early in the camping season (less people). Our site was perfect. The day we arrived, the wild horses were right across the river by late afternoon and were there for a couple hours…as were the bison! For a couple nights we heard coyotes, owls, and wild turkeys. We did have a bison graze right through our site but we stayed quiet and let him go on by! What an experience. Just need to always remember give them room…even if you are sitting in your tent! Don’t get up for a photo op! Stay put and quiet. Even tho the loop through the park didn’t go all the way around due to the coal vein fire, there was still a lot to see and the trails were not crowded. We were there for 4 days & 3 nights and that was perfect. We will be returning for sure! Hopefully when the musical is open for the season!

Loved how our campsite backed up to an open field with the river behind it. Also loved how the Cottonwood leaves russled at night in the breeze - sounded like rain showers. And loved hearing the coyote that howled and soon after many others also howled for several minutes!Got up at first light to drive the loop road - best light for photos. Also that's when the buffalo herds and wild horses are out. Abstract rock formations with dramatic lighting if you look for them.

The campsite had great views of the Little Missouri River. The campgrounds south loop sites by the river seem to be very good for tent campers like us. The grounds were well kept and the bathrooms were clean. In early May the water was turned off but we just bought a bunch of gallons with us and it was fine. Also, part of the auto tour route was closed. Even so the weather was great and we saw a lot of wildlife, enjoyed all the hikes, and loved watching the sunset from one of the overlooks. A beautiful place worth visiting, especially in the spring.

Campground in nice area, support facilities were very good. However, I think campground needs to make major investment in providing elevated tent pads for tent campers, especially in those sites most suitable to tents. Due to wear and tear, many sites have poor water drainage making it difficult to pitch a tent to avoid drainage due to rainstorms and resulting 'sticky' mud. In many respects this campground is way behind in catering to tent camping. Same situation, to lesser extent, occurs in the north Juniper Campground.

Stayed at Cottonwood campground in September 2019, during the Dakota Nights festival, and couldn't have been happier. Amenities were well looked after, and while there isn't a full visual barrier of brush between sites, there's enough space to not feel on top of one-another. A bison herd moved through the area one day, and it was exhilarating to see them up close from the safety of a vehicle. Dakota Nights was a great event, which I recommend. I wish the park had information about the indigenous peoples and their rich history in the area. This, I felt, was a gross oversight in the visitor center displays, the video about the park, and ranger knowledge (I asked four rangers). What was left was white colonialist history, which was a massive disappointment and a dishonor to the land.
