Our stay at site #22 has been our favorite for many years since it offers an excellent sunset view this time of year (November). Also the pier is there and not too many visitors. The 2 Hosts we met this time were really nice and friendly, spent some time talking to us. However, as we noticed that the security light toward the pier was not lighted and I don't think it was our last visit either. Upon asking about it, we were told there were up to 8 in the park not working. I asked why hasn't someone called the JNEC and had them back on because the charge is there on each one every month whether it burns or not. I am disappointed in the managing staff to handle this and it really opens the company up to liability. Not only are there alligators in the park but I have personally seen "water moccasin" snakes at that very location. I would highly suggest that the light situation be attended to ASAP !!! Also, as everywhere, there were many and some very large fire ant hills !!! One was right at our front door on the old pine stump !!! So glad we brought our own ant remedy and we used a good 1/4 can !!! I don't see the resources being used at all for the safety and overall good experience of campers. Hopefully this new administration will appoint a real Secretary of Transportation and the infrastructure will be truly tended to as it should for Americans. Thanks and we still plan to camp as always. THE THIBODEAUS

We reserved our favorite spot and had to cancel due to weather and other unavoidable circumstances. We reserved again and did receive our refund on the first time, which was great. Our trip was mostly enjoyable and the weather was good, we love the still natural beauty that still exists in this SE TEXAS park. My complaint is that the "attendants" weren't friendly and there was so much work that could be done with equipment/materials already on site but all is at a standstill and not being used. I do know the history of this park and there have been issues for many years, ONE being the "Hydrilla" plant in the lake. I ASKED the attendant if he could clean the fishing pier by us since the flood had settled massive amounts of the plant on the pier and especially, there was a foot at the entrance. I already saw snakes in the area and would not venture over the plant to the pier. Never happened !!! He only brought a blower and cleared the pier, putting the plant back into the water. My husband brought our small "potato fork" from home and I took 15-30 minutes to clear the ENTRANCE to the pier putting the plant to each side of the walkway. Also I parked my vehicle beside our truck and there's a good size washout hole that has been there for some time. I brought/used our hoe and square-lipped shovel from home, to get some rock across the driveway to put in that hole. I have been co-owner in a construction business and could have repaired all of the things needing repaired in a couple of days if I had that job !!! It's not hard to do. I also ... always pick up trash and garbage at any site where we camp, leaving it cleaner than found - ALWAYS ! There are many other questions I have that I will ask when I go to the COE office here locally. Recreation.gov however did it's job on the reservation end and processing end. Thanks !

Beautiful view of the lake. Hosts are fantastic and will bring you wood if you request it. Easy to get around in the park. Roads leading to park are rough...recommend Rt 156 instead of 777 and 155 as 156 is shorter. Jasper downtown park area is very pretty. No problems with bugs/ants. Big Rig friendly. We were there in a 76 foot set up in November. Only reason why we didn't give it a 5 is because the bathrooms are old and have push button showers that are only warm.

Nicely maintained campground on the shores of Lake Steinhagen. Our site, 22, was right on the lake. The sites are a mixture of mostly back-in with some pull-thru spots. The asphalt pads are generally level, with water and electric hookups. Some 50 amp and some 30 amp hookups. Covered picnic tables are on each site, as well as a fire ring. We camped Sunday through Friday in early August and there was hardly anyone in the park.

Sweet park host and beautiful site. Trails connect to Martin Dies. Boys had fun fishing, even without catching fish.

This is a well kept place that is a close option to Martin Dies Jr SP. Lots of shade cover and wonderful sunset views. The park attendant quickly check on us and gave us the papers to hang inside the car. Our spot was marked with the reserve sign and our last name. There were lots of good spots. The one we selected was right by the peer and boat ramp. Campsites were level and surface was asphalt. Everyone was quiet and welcoming. You had enough asphalt that you did not needed a rug outside, there was a firepit and fish cleaning table. My family love it! We are planning to go back soon.
