Tucked 7 miles into the National Forest in a small valley, you have to drive up a winding USFS road, which at times hug steep cliffs and beautiful sights. Once you get to the camp you find a secluded spot away from the worst of civilization. As with all spots near stagnant waters, you'll never have a moment to yourself, always being hounded by bugs, birds, and other creatures. I had the pleasure to stay in spot 17, on the far end of the campground, it was the perfect spot for me to get a peaceful night sleep. The grounds themselves are a mixture of waist high bushes, towering trees, stumps, and flat spaces for you to pitch your tent. The soil is soft and mailable, so finding a good spot is ideal for your tent not disappear during a bathroom break. There's multiple restrooms available to all campers, and a sound lake not to far from the sites. Once you get past the lily pads and the weeds on the lake shore, it is a beautiful swim. Hardly any wind, noise, or humans could reach you up here. So if you don't mind a drive to wake you up in the morning with the twists and turns not only of the USFS road, but also the State Routes leading up to it, this is the perfect campground for you.

We stayed at site 17 and it was lovely. It is very big and set back from the road. There are a couple spots for tents, but we slept in our vehicle. There arent any perfect trees for a hammock but if you wanted to stretch the ropes out you could make it work. It is barely down the road from the vault bathrooms. Site 18 is right across from the bathrooms and it has an amazing view of the lake but the site itself is tiny and close to the road. The roads getting to the campground are in mostly good condition. Six miles off the hwy and then 3 miles off that road. There is a resident bear that lives in the park, multiple campers saw him, but he was always running away in every encounter. The lake itself is surrounded by lily pads and not great for swimming. A flotation device, kayak, or small boat would be ideal to get to the center of the lake where it is clear. There are croppie, large mouth bass, and trout in the lake for fishing.

Fish Lake NEVER disappoints! Well except for the millions of mosquitos! The Forest service people are so kind and friendly and do a great job of taking care of the place. The only negative response I have about it is the road leading to Fish Lake. It really needs to be cleared. It is CRAZY overgrown and in places it was barely wide enough for our truck.
