Vermilion was a lovely experience. Kaiser Pass Road is narrow, windy, with many potholes, so make sure you account 2-2.5 hours if not in a truck that is able to absorb pothole vibrations.

The location itself is so peaceful with grandeur views of the Sierras. The campground needed a bit of repair as some of the water faucets weren't working, but as long as you brought enough water you were fine. Firewood could be grabbed from nearby Vermilion Valley Resort for $15 a bundle.

Campground was nearly empty in the middle of the week. I don’t know if that’s because there is almost no water in the lake or because of the tortuous, terrifying road in.

My family and I went camping at the Vermillion campsite the last week in July 2021 and it was a very pleasant stay. It was nice to have no cellphone reception and be in a very quiet & tranquil place. We stayed at campsite numbers 30 and 31 and both together are perfect for large families. We set our camping tents in the middle of both campsites. We were close to the restrooms and two water faucets making our experience much more enjoyable. Do expect frequent visits from various chipmunks and squirrels. Even though they were super cute to see, a couple of them had ticks on the side of their necks, but overall kept their distance from us. We had a great camp host that kept a baby bear off the premise with the help of two awesome camp host dogs Cookie and Lily. During our stay, we experienced one afternoon of rainy weather (for just a few minutes) making it a new experience for us...totally manageable. On the map, the lake appeared to be close to the campsite. In reality, it took us about a 45-50 minutes to get there and another 45 minutes to walk back. It wasn’t too bad, but I do recommend to take water for the way over & back. There was a nearby road that can get you to the lake faster. It was a beautiful sight to see....breathtaking! Keep in mind that the road to the campsite is best traveled in a vehicle with 4WD. Once there, you have gorgeous views from the campsite and I truly recommend camping at Vermillion. I am looking forward to coming back!
