Lake Thomas Edison, the portal to the Mono Recesses, is part of the chain of reservoirs that channel the San Joaquin watershed for irrigation and hydropower. The Vermillion Campground is classically outfitted to serve backpackers entering and exiting the Muir Trail. The facilities are remarkable given the remoteness of the camp. We were on motorcycles enjoying the Huntington, Edison, Florence reservoir tours. Be advised, the road from Huntington is a modestly improved goat trail with many blind corners. Caution and close attention to the possibility of oncoming traffic is essential. Fuel isnt available beyond Huntington Lake. We experienced the post-Labor Day serenity of a nearly empty campground. Also, be prepared for supply and demand prices!

Campground and bathrooms well-taken care of. General store and restaurant at the Vermillion Valley resort are great and the owner is very knowledgeable and accommodating. That facility is well-organized and nice to meet the hikers coming off the Pacific Crest Trail and the John Muir Trail and hear about their experiences. The lake only has water in the farthest section... another grim result of drought and climate change.
Road driving in is challenging (not for low cars) due to being narrow, curves and potholes. With the huge cost of fighting wildfires, the U.S. Forest Service does not have much remaining resources to maintain the road.

Site 27 is in full sun much of the day and is pretty dusty. lake Edison was also so low in late July that it wasn’t a great place to hang out. Campground was clean and quiet and the trip was worth it just to see what was at the end of that crazy road! We enjoyed spending time at Mono Hot Springs and the river. Vermillion Valley resort has essentials, friendly customer service, and some interesting backpacker culture.
