My parents have been going to Dinkey since they were teenagers. I have rented the group campground every summer for 8 years. The location continues to be unique and beautiful. However the service, such as it is, was terrible this year. First, the flush toilets (which we don't even use at the group site) were shut off for vague reasons never fully explained. This sent many campers to the vault toilets that are clearly assigned to the group camp (they are within the area that state the group camp reservation name. Also, several of the vault toilets used by campers at the simple cabins were also offline, and replaced with porta-potties that no one wanted to use, shunting yet more people to the group site toilets. This was a significant inconvenience. Second, there is no communication with campers prior to arrival. We are somehow e-mailed about payment details, and generic reservation reminders, but never any communication about water drinkability, toilet functionality, or anything else. You show up (in our case after driving five hours) and you get what you get. Third, one of the camp hosts was unbelievably rude on repeated occasions. When we asked why so many people were using the group site's toilets, we got a snotty tone and a made-up answer that they were for common use (never the case over our previous visits). When we asked for more checks of the toilets for toilet paper due to the increased usage, we got an eye roll. We got chewed out for having small, glass-encased candles in the bathrooms for light and scent. If this wasn't allowed, then no problem, but we'd been using them for the last seven years, and no host or ranger had said a thing. This same host also chewed us out for leaving a small bottle of hand soap at the faucet outside the toilets, our regular practice for seven years. We got repeated demands to read the rules, none of which specifically referred to the things we were being criticized for. Seriously considering taking at least a year off.

Really enjoyed the site. We had a large group with about 15 tents. There was plenty of space to sit and congregate. Multiple picnic tables and fire pits. The group site is well shaded, no additional canopies were needed. The vault toilets were very clean. The spigot for water was next to the toilets, but not in the campsite itself, so not very convenient. The creek is a 10 minute walk away. Lots of water, but very cold and mostly rocky. Night time temps were in the 40s, but day time was perfect in the low to mid 70s.

We are regulars at Dinkey. The group site is unique and lovely, and there are many things to do at and around the campground. Some things for improvement: 1. It would be fantastic if the group site could get flush toilets; there are already a few throughout the campground, and it would make the added expense of the group site more worthwhile. 2. The convenience and comfort of the campground is provided in large part by the privately run store. I don't know what the official relationship is between the camp and the store, but the shower services are beginning to fall apart. I believe only half of the showers were functioning and there are simple things like hooks for clothing that are not in the stalls. I'm not sure what can be done, but we found that cleaning up was more difficult this year, and that adds to the inconvenience/discomfort level of one's stay.

normally we book 4-6 campsites for our family annual camping trip. we were able to enjoy our time without anyone bothering us or us bothering other campers. Only problem we had was visiting the abandon sawmill, we always do day and night visits to the mill. we were there for a week and on the second day we did a night hike through the mill and had a great experience. on the 4th day we decided to do it again but we were greeted by the forest Ranger who was very rude and told us that area was off limits at night. He threaten to give us a citation if we did not leave the area, mind you I been doing this every time I camp at Dinkey and never had any issues going to the mill at night. I'm not sure if this was a one time thing since there are no signs that state the area is off limits at night time. Dinkey Creek is my favorite place to visit and has been for the last 6 yrs. we always have a great time.

Water is low in August, but still plenty of spots to swim and play. Fishing not great at that point. Still, a beautiful place!
