I was there mid July. Very much cooler than in the lower lands. Plenty of wildlife, and lush green forest.

This is a tired campground in a lovely treed location. The sites are close together and small, the bathroom facilities in urgent need of an upgrade. The water stations close to us were very difficult to fill water bottles from and the drains were completely clogged. The utility sinks also in urgent need of replacing. Felt sorry for the lovely camp hosts and any cleaning staff as these facilities seemed impossible to keep clean.
The location of this campground is excellent, with wonderful hiking options directly from the campground and nearby Elkwallow Wayside. Would love to see a renovation of camp sites and bathroom/water facilities, and also, ideally, something like the shower/laundry facilities at Loft Mountain campground.

A nice simple camp ground. Not crowded at beginning of May! Quiet. Nice hikes close by.

This campground is a launching pad for some great hikes. Quiet and convenient for those coming from the DC area

The camp space is spacious. Less than a minute to the closest rest rooms.

The store at Elkwallow [sp?] should be moved closer to the campground. As it is now, two miles and 1/2 of steep road away, it is inconvenient for anybody but the motorized campers.

Or, maybe, the camp should have its own store. It won't disturb things and would make the experience equally enjoyable for all, even those of us who like to avoid burning fossil fuel in a national par .

Absolutely loved our stay at Mathews Arm- got in a 7 mile hike, the campground was pretty cozy and accessible, and the views were great. There isn't a camp store super close so I recommend keeping that in mind for anyone who may want to make a stop there.
