Our campsite and the campgrounds were clean and well-maintained. The campground bathrooms were sorta clean. But...The pay showers down at the campstore had filthy floors, and there are no hooks to hang clean clothing off the floor. $5 for 10 minutes of hot water would be ok if the floors were clean. The change machine and the payslots worked fine. Before we left, we were picking up apples when a campground host / volunteer came and yelled at us, took a photo of our license plate, and said she was going to cite us for "destroying federal property". Ok, mea culpa. The stigma of being an apple thief will weigh heavily on me until my dying day. But here's what I want to know....The yoyos in the campsite next to us were burning their garbage and plastic recyclables in the firepit. We were choking from the smoke. Other yoyos were charging all their devices in the campground bathrooms. Where were those johnny-on-the-spot campground hosts / volunteers then?

I always enjoy staying at Loft Mountain. My site was cozy and clean. I felt like I had privacy from my neighbors. The restrooms were kept clean and stocked. I saw lots of deer. And was able to walk part of the AT around the campground.

Good campsite in the no generator zone. Was pretty quiet by 10:30-11. Close to some nice day hikes

Loft Mountain Campground is a wonderful place to set up base camp while exploring Shenandoah National Park. The Appalachian Trail warps around the campground and provides a starting point to many other trails and points of interest in the park. The campground is well developed and the ability to use indoor flushable toilets and even the showers at the camp store, make roughing it not so bad for those not used to it.

Not much to say here that has not already been said so I will try to keep it short. Excellent grounds for the price, though I recommend visiting prior to your camping trip so you can reserve a spot that suits your needs. While sites may be in the same loop right next to each other, some are drastically different in size. Glad that RVs were mostly separated from the tent campers and there are strict rules about hours of generator use (sad that the RV industry has lobbied NPS so hard that tent camping is gradually becoming more difficult and/or less enjoyable on federal land). If you plan to snag a first-come-first-serve site I recommend showing up early. If you show up on a Friday/Saturday during peak season without a reservation, expecting to grab a site, you will probably be disappointed unless you get in line around daybreak. Remember to leave the site the same or better than you found it!
