The generator policy here is terrible. We had a huge fifth wheel pull in and park right next to us and run their super loud generator for eight hours every day. We barely saw these people. they weren't there for the park or for nature, apparently they just wanted to watch TV. the fact that the generator policy allows them to run it till 9 PM in the winter is absolutely insane. Real campers want to have a fire and sit outside but it was so loud we couldn't hear ourselves think, either outside or in our camper. if people are too cold and need to run their generator then they should just stay home the first place. I appealed to the host and to the Ranger, but there was nothing they could do because of the bad policy. I've been camping for 30 years and in many ways. This was the worst experience I've ever had.

Let me preface by saying that we've been coming here camping for 43 years, and are now full-time travellers, staying at many state and national parks around the country. We booked a new site this year (H-212) for our annual 2 week family vacation, and liked the site (overall) very much. But in the 2 weeks we were here, no maintenance took place (no grass cutting), which was unusual. Maintenance of the nearby restroom was minimal as well, not like it used to be. Are there budget cutbacks? New management? We also always used to see park rangers patrol through the campgrounds on foot and by vehicle, and that too was nearly non-existent. Consequently there were lots of rules being broken daily (vehicles going the wrong way on one-way roads, kids playing on scooters (for which our grandson got chastised just a couple of years ago here), kids playing on hoverboards, etc. One evening our (newly arrived) neighbor decided it was ok to run his generator at 10pm and since no one was around to tell him otherwise, it was left to me to knock on his door to let him know that not only were generator hours over, but quiet time had started. Who do we go to for things like this? There was no camp host/hostess in our loop, and the ones from the other side were barely functioning in their job. They spent the days driving around changing check-in tags, and chatting with a very select group of campers. Never did they stop by our site at all. We have been noticing more and more bad behavior in the park generally since Covid, which isn't surprising given the increase of newbies in the camping realm, but we've also noticed a lack of rangers in general. One evening we went up to Milam Gap to turn around (about 9pm) and saw 3 small tents set up in the parking lot, one with lights on inside, trying to avoid paying the camping fees or just unable to find spots. And on two consecutive nights, a lady in a Class B RV was camping/sleeping in the parking lot at the Visitor Center at Big Meadows.

For those who enjoy dry camping, the national park service maintains spacious sites that provide distance between you and other camp sites. The grass areas are cut and that helps curtail the insects. Do not be fooled by the fencing around the Big Meadows wayside facility. The services are open, yet at first glance you might feel the facilities are closed for construction. The park service is expanding the building's foundation to accommodate a larger facility. From the campsite, you can walk to the wayside for some blackberry ice cream or needed supplies. The Big Meadows Lodge is also a short walk away where you can enjoy a meal in the restaurant or a drink at the bar - check out their desserts.

Nice campground. Although it was mostly full, it didnt feel cramped. Our site was a very large pull through site. We could easily fit our 40 ft class A and our tow vehicle. In fact there was room for at least one more large rig in our pull through site. The problem was it was so uneven that the only place to level our rig was the first 40 feet of the site. There was plenty of grass between our site and sites on either side. Lots of trees in our section. Verizon reception was very poor, but we were able to pick up a number of tv stations.

Big Meadows and Skyline is always a fantastic experience. The hikes, the views and the wildlife all make a wonderful stop for the entire family. I highly recommend spending time in the visitors center and then exploring the nearby hikes like Dark Hallow falls, a walk through the Meadow or a trip down to the Rapidan camp and finishing off the day with a meal at the Big Meadows lodge! Each a very unique experience and all worth the time and effort!
