Quiet, peaceful - away from the day-to-day madness

We loved the campground - beautiful, spacious. Our only complaint was we had a neighbor who ran their generator every second that it wasnt official quiet hours, which took away from the beauty. We think more limited generator hours would be appropriate for a National Park.

Reservations were made weeks prior to arrival date. A few days before received an email from NPS that the Quaker Run fire was active in the east part of the park, east of Big Meadows Campground. This resulted in no electric at the campground (no bathrooms, showers, etc.) but they did have generators running to supply power for the gas pumps, visitor and camp stores and the pumps for water. PortaPotty's were in place at the bathroom locations. Day before arrival another email mentioned a fire ban was in effect; so no fires. This all was ok. The campground does not have electric sites so I was bringing a genny anyway. The only down side was no fires which I really enjoy in cooler weather. Went down to 19F one night. Rained, sleet and snow one AM which was kinda neat. Most of the leaves were down. Some color was still around at the lower elevations. So, even with this 'issues' had a great time. Did several hikes (a couple were crowded) but that is expected on weekends. A great time always in the park. Park staff were very nice. I have been going to the SNP for 40 years and never disappointed.

We loved this campground for the convenience. We wanted to take our time and do the Skyline Trail in two days, so this was perfect. The hosts couldn't have been nicer and the campsites are (welcomingly) spread apart nicely. Ample space (which is so unusual these days!).

Big Meadows is a great campground because of its location in Shenandoah National Park. It does not have any hookups though. Be careful if you are camping in a loop with large trees though because there are a lot of dead branches which could cause problems during a storm or strong winds. One came down right next to our site. The bathrooms are clean and there are showers for a fee. There is a laundromat on site. The lodge is really nice with a restaurant and tap room. The visitor center is nice with helpful rangers. The store has a lot to offer, including cooked meals to go while we were there. There is a gasoline pump on site also. There are lots of good hikes and views in the park.

Mobile Data Speed Map
#123
If there are speed tests submitted for a campground the campsite icons will be colored based on the average download speed and the border will be colored based on the average upload speed.
In this example Campsite #123 has very good download speeds and decent upload speeds. If a campsite has a solid yellow color it means there was no data speed detected in the test(s). Clicking on a campsite icon reveals more details.
