This is a top campsite, in an outstanding location. Really couldn't ask for more except sunshine!

Beautiful and quiet campground. Right on the Appalachian Trail so can jump on a hike right from your site but also conveniently located in the middle of the park to get to get to other trails. Only complaint is not even the cost of the firewood ($8/bundle) but the fact that it was firewood that didn't burn well...at all! Bring plenty of fire starters with you!

First trip to Shenandoah - stayed at Big Meadows campground and would recommend it. Stayed on the E loop - the outer campsites have a great valley view over the Appalachian Trail but are a little smaller; inner campsites have a bit more space. There's a camp store, gas, showers, and restaurant in the area; also a couple of decent hikes for an easy day.The main attraction for our trip was hiking Big Rag - make sure to reserve permits ahead of time and be ready for a bit of scrambling up and down rocks. If you're staying within the park campgrounds, plan for a bit of a commute - the trailhead is outside of the main park, about an hour away from Big Meadows campground.

Campfire smoke! We stayed at Big Meadows campground on a weekend in July 2019 in our RV/camper van. We expected the campground to be crowded, but we never expected the campfire smoke to be absolutely unbearable - smoke trapped under the tree canopy with no place to "vent." We had to keep our vehicle windows closed, in the heat, until about 1 am when the campfires died. The next morning we checked out and left. The NPS should at least put some limit on campfires, or at least some WARNING to people about the smoke, especially for people with asthma or lung problems (which we don't have).
