Arrived on Day1, camped out on nights dropping into 20sF on Nights 1+2, had nice hikes on Days 1+2, and prepped to leave on Day3. Car battery was dead. After two different random guests tried helping, the nice Ranger Lady drove up with a battery pack and, in a few cold minutes, the car was running. This was above and beyond the call of duty for her, especially standing in a cold breeze, but she was nonchalant about how much she had helped me! Great park, friendly visitors, helpful staff!

I have camped at Big Meadow in the past. This was the first time to be there in November and I didn't realize that it is about 10 degrees colder up on the mountains. Several nights the temperature dropped to 24 d. Non the less, the campground was open, bathrooms were closed but there were porto-potties and available water to access. The camp store and visitors center were also open during the day so ice, gas and groceries were available for purchase also. There were a couple days with nice sunshine so that hikes around the park were enjoyable. I had a dog along so some trails were prohibited but there were sufficient other options. The Quaker Ridge fire was still burning but luckily we experienced no smoke issues on the top of the ridge. Getting a reservation for the weekend was almost impossible on-line. It appeared that all sites were taken within an hour of opening up of those dates. However, so I snatched the only one I saw. If I had waited for awhile, even days later, I would have had much more of a selection as additional sites became open. Just a note, there are very few sites that afford any privacy. Most are quite open to the view of other campers. All sites were flat so that it did not cause issues for setting up a camper to be level. This area of Shenandoah National Park is quite nice and there are many hikes and lookouts to enjoy.

Day 1 we were completely fogged in, 30 feet visibility. I was looking for a plan B. Day 2 the fog was gone and didn’t come back. Facilities were great. I do want to mention $5 for a shower is a little rich and they always a mess so we didn’t use them.

Big Meadows campground is a wonderful campground in the heart of Shenandoah National Park. Several trails start in or near the campground. It is centrally located with a lot of trails nearby and about halfway from the North and South entrances of the park. The actual Big Meadows is right across the street from the campground and is a wonderful place to walk into and observe wildlife and to stay after dark and observe the stars on a clear night. Not a criticism but just note that like a lot of campgrounds some sites are smaller than others and some are less shaded than others. But no matter which site you stay at you are not far from a restroom. Will definitely be back.

We had a great time!

The campground was clean with enough space for several tents. Highly recommend Hawksbill and Miller’s overlook for day hikes- and especially Miller’s to watch the sunset.
