The campground itself was clean and well maintained. The staff was professional and very helpful. Our campsite (#16) was adequate, but suffered primarily in comparison to one i used in Sherando Lake State Park back in September. The tent set-up area at Sherando was groomed and graded gravel and the campsites were more widely separated from each other. The bathroom facilities were adequate at Big Meadow, but it was a little onerous to have the showers all centrally located and to learn they are coin-operated. Again, the issue was more with the expectations set by my last camping experience than with the facilities themselves. It would also be nice if the access points/trail heads tying into the local trails and shown on the camp maps were somehow marked inside the campground. We guessed successfully but met with other campers who were not so lucky. My experience with the other campers was very positive; Big Meadows seems to attract a considerate class of visitors. I enjoyed our short stay enough that I would visit again, but not so much that Big Meadow will become my "go to" campground in the Shenandoah NP. I gave it a three star rating to reflect the fact while I would not suggest that anyone avoid it, I would also not strongly advocate anyone staying there over any of the other available campgrounds.

This is a beautiful campground in a good location for both day hiking and an Appalachian Trail rest stop. The man who maintains the shower and laundry keeps them beautifully clean. The lodge has a nice sitting room, a beautiful view, good beers on tap, and a restaurant.
The only drawback is the layout. I used tent site #16, and it's a long walk to the lodge and back, and to the wayside and back. Also, access to site #17 seems to go right through the middle of the tenting area for site #16, which is hard to tell from recreation.gov. There are also a lot of tiny flies there in September.
Not perfect, but I'd visit again in a heartbeat.
