The trip was great, except for the freezing temperatures. It was quieter than I was expecting in the campground and I think that's because there is a good amount of space between camp sites. Finally, I forgot to bring cash and I worried we wouldn't be able to buy wood. Thankfully they take cards at the laundry area where the wood is sold.

Big Meadows is an amazing campsite, it has way more amenities than I expected including bear boxes, running water/toilets, a camp store, a coffee shop/wayside, a gas station and the visitor's center. Across from the entrance to the site is the Big Meadow which is beautiful and on some nights the rangers lead tours through there at night to stargaze! I was sad that on the night we were there it was cloudy and rainy so we weren't able to do that but its so cool that it is offered. The closest hikes on Skyline from Big Meadows are Dark Hollow Falls and Hawksbill summit, both of which I recommend!! Dark Hollow is a waterfall trail that is down on the way there and uphill on the way back. Hawksbill is the opposite with the highest point in the park at the top.The sites themselves are very well maintained and spaced apart nicely for privacy but still accessible from the parking spots. I like the system of having kind of a parking lot with campsite spaces away from the sites so that cars are not driving into the woods by the sites. One downside to this site is there are no showers and throughout the park we noticed that all of them cost money. I understand that its for conservation reasons but it would be nice to have one spot for campers to shower for free. Be prepared to do all your dishes away from your site for bear reasons. Food cannot just be rinsed out onto the ground, it has to be dumped into the toilet. Overall it was a great site with more than expected for tent camping. We very much enjoyed it and if we come back to Shenandoah we will pick Big Meadows as the site again.
