We love camping at Union Creek and we have a few favorite campsites. This site is not quite the same as it used to be but we still enjoyed our stay. Be aware that due to the placement of several large logs, you can no longer fit a large (6+ person) tent without being in the driveway, on a hill, or on tree roots. Also, the creekside path is routed through the edge of the site so there may be a lot of people walking right past your setup.

The campground has some cool history, originally built by FDR's Civilian Conservation Corps in the 30s. Spacious sites with good access to the creek. Potable water sources are numerous. You can tell it was created when quality mattered. I reduced a star for our experience with feeling nickel-and-dimed.

We reserved a spot online. When we arrived, there were numerous spots available. We switched ours for the spot next door (booked spot had t.p. piles in the trees - people, please pack it out) and let the host know of our change. We were told we needed to move to a different location, as this one was reserved online for the next day. (Incidentally, they never showed). Then we got charged for both campsites. (In the old days, that never happened). We also planned to stay an extra day and paid in advance, but the smoke rolled in, so we packed up and left, losing another night's pay.

The hike to the Rogue Canyon from the campground was gorgeous. We shouldn't have wasted a day going up to Crater Lake, as it was shrouded in smoke. There's plenty to do around Union Creek Campground. We'll be back, only this time we won't reserve, and we won't pay for nights in advance.
