If you've ever stayed at forest service cabins in Colorado before, you know its a wide range of amenities from just four walls and a roof to small house. This is a small house with all of the amenities (full kitchen, bathroom, shower multiple beds) but also isolated in a good way. Saguache is about 20 min away.

The cabin was in good order on arrival. This is the second consecutive year at the Upper Crossing Guard Station cabin and 1 previous stay at the Stone Cellar Guard Station cabin. We are hoping to make it an annual family event. We feel its a great use of resources and a great value. Encountered staff were friendly and personable. It is our hope that these facilities remain accessible to the public in the long term along with the stunning vistas.

Wonderful cabin, perfect getaway for our family, we had the best time. Beautiful scenery, lots to see and we enjoyed fishing at the dome lakes not too far away. Saw lots of elk, mule deer and waterfowl. We will definitely be back next year.

This cabin is a gem! What a treasure- to have a full kitchen (except for hot pads), hot showers, very good heat (furnace AND wood stove- bring plenty of wood in the winter!) along with beautiful views, hiking and lots of wildlife, without needing to get in your vehicle. A short walk past the cabin is a spring fed series of ponds and a running creek (in January!) with plenty of ducks (including green-winged teals) and a PAIR OF DIPPERS!! We've seen many dippers in the summer, but never in mid-winter. What a treat. The cabin itself is well kept, clean and roomy- although the mattresses are a bit hard, but that is a minor issue- bring a foam pad if you need a cushier sleep. We feel so fortunate to have found this place a few years ago and will come back often in the future. The USFS outdid itself here! Thanks!!

Cabin is a little tired but still a great place to unplug and just enjoy being with the family and out in nature.

The guard station was great as usual. Clean; no sign of mice & most all the amenities you need. No cell service but it kicks in halfway to Saguache. The heater works wonderfully as well. There's a Italian restaurant in Saguache (The Village) that I'd recommend although it was only open the weekend when we visited.

Nice cabin in a beautiful location. Well stocked kitchen. The heater was very loud from vibration but we put a rock on top and it helped.

A quiet stay. Be sure to bring your own firewood. Fireplace is small, so your wood needs to be cut down roughly a foot or so.

This is a very quiet cabin location and easy to find. Nice little hike behind the cabin and all appliances worked. No complaints. Good for me and the dog.

Beautiful cabin in a very serene setting. We had a lovely time here and the escape from noise and light pollution of the city is reenergizing. Cabin was clean and comfortably sleeps 6 or more. There are 2 sets of bunk beds in one bedroom with a full on the bottom and twin on top. There is another single bunk bed with same configuration in the other bedroom. The bathroom is roomy. Kitchen is fully stocked. There are several hiking trails you can take from cabin - for all skill levels and many more nearby on BLM land.

I've rented Upper Crossing several times and several Rec.Gov cabins but this one is definitely one of my favorites with it's great location it is a gateway to a great area including Saguache Park and the Cochetopa River and it's tributaries. Great hiking and fishing areas and the fishing on the Saguache River and Sheeps Creek by the cabin is not a disappointment!

A quiet stay, easy to get to with mountains around the cabin. Stayed fairly cool inside. Don't use Google maps if you're coming from Salida.

I only was able to spend 1 night which was fine as I was on my way further north the next 2 nights @ a Wyoming cabin. This was my 4th time here & it was wonderful as always. If you're looking for a rustic or more remote experience, I would probably search other cabins in the area as this place has pretty much all the comforts of home such as full kitchen, indoor bathroom & shower, microwave & electricity and is only a short distance from a major highway. However; for older & more physically challenged folks, this place is great.

The Upper Crossing Guard Station is a wonderful basecamp for all sorts of adventures in the northern San Luis Valley. From fishing to hiking to climbing and mountain biking, this area is loaded with fun things to do. The Guard Station itself is a wonderfully isolated property, yet the cabin has charm and most of the essential amenities that you will need to be comfortable in between adventures. One of the best features of the Upper Crossing Guard Station is that there is no cell service for miles. Zero. Zilch. So grab a good book, a good friend, or both, as you get away from it all to recharge in the woods!

One of my favorites no matter what time of year I've gone. Easy to get to with only a mile of dirt road to access the cabin. My wife ( who has mobility issues) especially loves the advantages of a full bathroom inside the cabin instead of an outhouse although it's not as big an issue for myself. Noticed very minimal mice activity but I would always recommend not leaving anything out overnight like dirty dishes or any food.

Great location and good place with no noise. Easy to access. Was a very enjoyable place to stay and my dog seemed comfortable. You do need to bring your own wood for burning though.

We had a great time. The ranger station worked very well for handicap accessible needs. The cabin is off the beaten path slightly; about 1 mile off the highway, yet gives you the sense of peaceful solitude.

I just used PerfectCamp.com to book six consecutive August nights at the most popular campsite in one of the most popular campgrounds in Humboldt Redwoods State Park in California. That is not anything I could have accomplished anywhere else with the ease I did here! Thank you, PerfectCamp! I LOVE this site! You will find me on several other camping sites but the design, format, functionality, and personality of this the best. It’s fresh and clean.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
