My favorite campground. My kids love it too!

We have stayed at Alto Pit Campground many times in the past years. We ride bicycles, use 4x4s, and ATV's, which this camp accommodates well and there is the accompanying sounds of motors revving off and on throughout the day. It's fun! We were out riding much of the day and would come back to eat, relax, and sleep. This time unfortunately, was not as pleasant as many others had been. Two things had adverse affects on our experience. The first was loud partying right in the center campsite past quiet hours Friday and Saturday nights. We have found this to be a more widespread problem in campgrounds around the Southwest. Although we love families and people gathering to have a good time together, we also love nature and feel that is a large part of what most people seek camping. It is difficult to find a peaceful respite in camp when loud music and campers shouting above the music lasts on into the night (from dark until after 10pm). The other downer was bits of trash all around camp, under almost any tree or bush and especially under the picnic table. For some reason, trash is not being picked up and disposed of either by the former campers or the hosts. Of course we picked up the trash and endured the loud campers best possible, but that is not as it should be. Folks, please be respectful if you are camping and think about making nature the focus if at all possible. Thanks!

Awesome campground! For a site that’s specific to OHV, it’s very natural looking, and we’ll kept. It can be said that an associated fee is well worth it. Brings customers who respect the area, staying on the trail and picking up after themselves. The only negative is the high risk of the blind turns on the trails. I’m sure some like the risk factor but for me these trails would be best being directional. Just a thought considering many have been air evacuated after a head on collision.

We have stayed in marks managed by Recreation.gov for many years in states too numerous to mention. Sometimes we make reservations ahead of time online but probably 50% of the time we simply drive in and then fill out on site envelope and pay what is due. Upon our visit to Alto Pit campground we followed the same boldly listed large instructions that we always do. We did also look at the other numerous signs on the board at the entrance. There are so many signs that you get lost in all of the information. After paying our fee the camp host came by and told us that we did our reservation incorrectly and that the process had recently changed and that there was a sign addressing this. We went back to the board with him and he pointed out a small, 8x10 very wet (since it had rained) sign in the bottom corner stating all overnight reservations needed to be done online. This is very confusing as there are still payment envelopes available upon which he informed us that they were for day use however it isn't stated anywhere that envelopes are NOW FOR DAY USE ONLY. One week later we are still waiting for our refund as we paid cash in the provided envelope and then paid online by credit card.
My suggestion for Recreation.gov is to put the sign stating the changes ON TOP OF THE OTHER SIGN WE ARE ALL USED TO. Maybe mark it in red. Mmmmm, maybe remove the old signs period.

We were then directed to the local Recreation office in Prescott where we informed them about what happened, and are still awaiting our funds to be returned to us. In talking to the staff there, this is a very common problem with the recent changes and because there are so many people like us who have used the register on site process for many years. As we drove around other campgrounds in the Prescott area, new signs are also in a very inconspicuous location on the entrance boards.

We showed up for our reservation and the park was closed. We weren’t able to stay there. We are still waiting for Susan, to call us back, and give us a full refund including our booking fee.
