This campground, though primitive, was absolutely beautiful. Spillway Canyon campground is almost as far back as you can go down the approximately ten-mile dirt road, which is built on the old railroad bed and follows the South Platte River. There are three tunnels cut through the rock to drive through along the way, which were originally created for the trains which were used back in the 1930's to build the dam and reservoir. My site backed up to some large rock formations and was stunningly scenic. This is a quiet, rustic campground in a very out-of-the-way location, definitely more for people who are not merely "campers," or weekend partiers, but for those who appreciate the outdoors and nature's beauty. Fishing and even rock-climbing are some of the activities that I saw while traveling alongside the river. One note: I only stayed two days, and was only able to book one site for one day, and then move to another site for the next day, which would've been a hassle. Well, someone at the NPS was very thoughtful and did some rearranging, and I was able to stay in the same beautiful site for both days! Great campground and I wish I'd been able to stay longer.

Had such a great time at spillway as usual. The bathrooms could’ve used a little attention, just even once a day. But other than that love this place.

The site itself was awesome and we enjoyed the hike up overlooking the reservoir and entire region. Great recommendation by the site host. Unfortunately we had some super loud partying neighbors out last couple of nights. A lot of swearing and crazy loud music. The camp host did speak to them and they quieted down the first night by 10:00. The second night they were rowdy much later. The camp itself is great and in a beautiful location. You can't control who will end up camping nearby. Aside from that our experience was good. The canyon is stunning and the Fall colors were amazing.

THEY DO NOT ACCEPT THE AMERICA BEAUTIFUL PASS! We still had to pay a cash-only $7 entry fee; even though we pre-paid reservations and hold a National Parks America the Beautiful pass. The park is beautiful and the water is amazing. But there were too many people.
