Alvarado Campground ended up being a total surprise and well be back when we need a couple of days of decompressing in the mountains. Its going to be dry camping no water hookups, no electric, and no sewer dump site. I would have given Alvarado a 5-star rating, except for the fact that you cannot use a hose to fill up your RVs water tank at any of the many water spigots around the campground. I was fortunate enough to have a pair of collapsible camping buckets and a funnel that attaches to the fresh water inlet, so I was able to put water into the tank. It took a while, but it did the job.The campsites are fairly far apart; we had a large group (too large if you look at the limits) that was spread between the sites on both sides of our site, and we could barely hear them. Site 33 had a relatively flat pull in, so leveling with blocks was simple. There is a downhill walk to the picnic table; this was somewhat difficult for my disabled wife, but she was able to make it. Trees are all around the site, offering good shade. A stream runs through the campground, although not next to site 33. Pit bathrooms are located conveniently close and are maintained several times a day. Deer wander through the campground all the time, and we were buzz-bombed by hummingbirds and stared at by squirrels and chipmunks. The fire pit was handy - we had a wood fire both nights of our trip and enjoyed the warmth of the fire at night at 9200 feet. Some of the upper loop sites have a view looking east toward the valley, and I noticed that some had steep driveways - definitely not recommended for RVs. If youre looking for an inexpensive, quiet, accessible (3 hours away from Denver), and beautiful campground, Alvarado is awesome.

Campground host was extremely helpful when we wanted to move to another spot during our stay. Both sites were beautiful, but the one we moved to had a small stream. Awesome place. We will definitely return!

Alvarado is one of our most favorite camping spots ... until this year!
We have a small 23’ RV ...
The lack of site maintenance is becoming very discouraging...there is a lot of lost revenue when when so many sites aren’t usable due to not grading...not just from a leveling standpoint but the hugh run off ditches that make them unusable...the feedback I hear is “Don’t go there” which is obvious when you see how many empty spots there are...that all equates to money lost ... give a local with a grader some employment...that would be a win win!
Speaking of giving work out to locals...
My other complaint is the group you hired to do tree mitigation ...
They decided to find a group of dead trees right next to our site #33 (major erosion site)
At 9:30am on Thurs 8-19-21...peak camping season with campers everywhere...we also came close to having one of there trees hitting us as we came off the Rainbow trail...another brilliant plan of theirs...mitigate trees next to the car parking area midday at the entrance to the Rainbow trail.
So you ask “how was our experience at Alvarado this year?” HORRIBLE!
Camping was bad enough dealing with all the rude & noisy newbies but then add bad park management to the equation... it sucked!

Great campsites in a secluded location. I’m sure it’s busier during weekends. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The campground itself was beautiful, and all the roads and sites were well-maintained. The access to the Rainbow Trail and other hiking trails is excellent. Finally, the Campground Host, Steve, was super friendly and welcoming.

Great camp host and access to alpine lakes via nearby trails. The campsites have a good amount of space between them and I plan to return.
