We stayed at Shenango Rec Area over the 4th of July weekend in New Duck Loop. Due to ongoing construction, the majority of the park was closed so there was no access to swimming areas and we were limited to where we could walk or ride bikes.
Also, due to a sewage line break over the winter, the shower house and restrooms on New Duck Loop were closed. We had to use porta-potties and a trailer shower house. The shower house wasn’t too bad but I never had hot water when I used them.
Leading up to July 4th, the porta-potties were pumped out and cleaned every other day. However, after July 5th, they didn’t come to pump for 4 days. All of the units were almost full of human waste and there wasn’t any toilet paper. The temperature during this time was in the 90s, so you can imagine the stench. When I said something to the person in the check-in station, they hadan “I don’t care” attitude and said to talk to a park ranger. When I talked to a ranger, they didn’t know when the company was going to come and pump because the park was out of money due to cost over-runs on the paving project.
As for the paving project, I don’t see why they had to mill all of the old blacktop down then dig down 12 to 14 inches to lay a new base before paving. The work was equivalent to what you see on interstate projects. The roads in the camping area only have cars, trucks, and campers on them doing 15 MPH, not tractor trailers doing 70 MHP. This seemed to be a grossly over engineered project that could have been appropriated better.
